RIP my AC compressor

Now I have to get a new 2 ton unit and replace the air handler because of this R22 nonsense. Not in LA but curious to know what I should expect to pay.

Better be thankful you're buying a new unit now instead of Jan 1 when the new seer2 standards take effect. It's saving you about 25% buying now.
Depending on your seer rating for new unit anywhere from 5500 to 7500 for 2 ton unit totally installed up to code

That’s the plan. I am waiting until December. Got a quote for $6,800. Fear is that the price will be nuts in 2023.

Don't wait past December as of Jan 1 the only existing units that were already made have to be 18 seer or higher everything below that threshold is illegal. Cost for the new seer2 law is roughly 20-25% percent more wholesale.

It's not fear. I used to manage retail HVAC companies but I'm now with a large wholesale distributor and we have already seen the new cost of units will be 20-25% higher. Anyone that has a HVAC unit on its last leg better change them now.

You can still buy R22. I just bought 10 pounds of it off the internet and hooked up an old AC from a house remodel in my shop. So thats possible Though it may not be worth your time.

The compressor has no power going to it

OP: Are prices going up or going down?
The $6,800.00 you were quoted might be a deal in three months from now.
Do it now.

Currently in the process of removing 15 year old unit and putting in a new 5ton.
I feel your inevitable pain.

I had a new unit put in my house two years ago (it was the summer of Covid) and it was just over $7k. There was some extra work that had to be done than just a standard unit installation so I would say that price is on par.
I've had to have 2 units replaced in my adult life. It always sucks when that expense hits you.

R22 jug is going for over 1300. Anyone buying 22 to keep a dinosaur unit going is wasting their money.
The compressor is the units heart. It pumps the units blood ie refrigerant. Would you give a human a blood transfusion if his heart was already dead?

That doesn't sound bad. I would just bite the bullet now. I'm going through an ac job from hell right now

I just bought 2 new Goodman 2 ton Full HVAC systems for $10,800 all in (taxes, install, etc). Only mistake I made was not asking to keep my old units. Apparently I coulda got around $400 each for the components
ETA: North Atlanta suburbs - shite cut about 60% of my energy consumption from last July. Why I didn’t do this 4 years ago When prices were lower

Thanks everyone. I figured $6,800 was in the high end of reasonable. Will have to pull the trigger.

2.5 ton American Standard outside unit installed 4500
3 weeks later inside unit takes a dump, 4650. Both dead units were old. outside unit was 2007 mfg date and inside unit was a bit newer, it could use the new freon with a small parts change...apparently it wasnt draining well and rusted a pin hole in the evaporator..changed the whole air handler/heater...will save money in the long run...old system was about a SEER 8

I had two Goodman 10 ton commercial units at my old location. Replaced a compressor every damn year. Still pissed about it.

Just replaced a 19 year old 3.5 ton 10 Seer Lennox which was still working fine. Got a 3.5 ton 16 Seer Carrier replacing everything including gas furnace for net $6,500. I can tell a difference in the humidity control also - temps 3-4 degrees higher than old system feel the same I think due to less humidity in the air.
Didn’t want to risk having to replace it under “duress” and with potentially higher costs later on.

I’m about to pay $5700 to replace a 2 ton unit. My issue hasn’t been cost, it was finding someone that actually wants the work. I swear it’s like no one around where I live actually wants the job.
