Born on Christmas, died on Labor Day, built a unique music & entertainment empire along the way. RIP.

One of my favorite songs by him is “Flying Tigers” about Louisiana’s Clare Chennault. What a fearless guy, and his lyrics make me feel as if I’m up there in the plane with Chennault doing all of those crazy moves.
quote:
What the hell did Marco Polo think when he ran into the wall? Or the crazy flying tigers doin' spins and loops and stalls Just a taste for something different, perking up a boring day Now our man from Louisiana feels exactly the same way

I loved Jimmy. I listened to his music a thousand times. The first time I saw him live was in Houston, Texas around 1981 or so. I still have the newspaper review of the concert in one of my scrapbooks.
His 70's music was the best, in the early 80's he still had some good stuff also.
A couple personal favorites besides the well known stuff are Cowboy in the Jungle and Woman going crazy on Caroline Street

Wow. Certainly not the news I wasn’t expecting when I woke up this morning.
I remember when I was a kid, my dad and I went on a trip and he started playing a Jimmy Buffet tape. “He went to Paris” has always been a favorite of mine and of course “Cheeseburgers in Paradise” RIP

First Bob Barker note Jimmy Buffett? Rough week.
He was a great musician and lived life to the fullest. Now he's having his cheeseburger in paradise.

He did a surprise run in and looked really skinny a month or so back. I was wondering - man how crazy this is.

After my Gutter Shark days, I played in a band called Big Sun with my buddy Joe Tullos, who was also in the Gutter Sharks. We were playing Jazz fest at the old Gibeau stage, when I was back stage setting up my stuff, I seem to recognize these two guys sitting at a table eating bbq ribs. Then I realize it’s Jimmy Buffet and Ed Bradley, they wanted to see the bad that was playing before us because of their name, Shot Down in Ecuador Jr, Got to talk to them for a second, both nice as can be.
As you know, Joe also wrote a song for Evangeline which I believe was the first band signed to his Margaritaville record label. We went to Jazz Fest I think 1994 or so to watch them, and there were probably 50 people watching. Jimmy came on stage and performed 4 of his songs with them. I remember Joe telling me how his oldest and Jimmy’s daughter Savannah were hanging out as 4-5 year olds.

Sad to hear it. Many fond memories of listening to Jimmy on the way to Tampa/St. Pete every summer.
Come Monday is a favorite.

RIP to a true musical icon! I’m glad that I got to see him at Jazz Fest one year. Fair winds and following seas to the ultimate Pirate!

worked with him on tour for about six weeks back in the 80s, one of the best times I’ve had

Some of his lyrics were some of the most atrocious ever set to music

My parents ditched one of my school plays as a kid to go to his concert. They took my toy shark with them. And, it never came back. And yet I still forgive them.

I know folks who were close to him.
Met him a couple of times through them.
He was very nice and genuine.
He was pretty charitable behind the scenes as well.
