Yeah, if you call going to Auburn for a year and flunking out being an alum, then okay.
He tried to get into LSU after flunking out, was taking a scenic route from Baton Rouge back to Mobile and happened to pass by Pearl River Community College. They let him in, he got his grades up, and transferred to USM where he graduated.
My late stepmother had several classes with him in the late 60s.

To buttress McGruff's argument, if blackout drunk fraternity kids can seamlessly sing your music, you're not that special.
What an utterly retarded premise

I honestly don’t see how anyone could bash Jimmy Buffett, as far as his body of work
This is the OT, I’ve seen them shite on George Strait and Alan Jackson

I think Jimmy lived a good life where you are alcoholic loser.
I know a drunk when I see one.
Doesn't matter if you've sobered up or not.

Good bye, Pirate Troubadour to generations; we’re glad for the ways your music enriched our lives. Long as there are boats, bars, and beaches you will live in our hearts and memories… and we will still joyfully sing these anthems you’ve left us with.

I literally can’t imagine being this miserable in life.

You missed the boat here. It's okay.

He's not Ronnie James Dio. He's not Meatloaf, Freddy Mercury, or any other brilliant voice. Did my friend that had a fifth of Crown in him sound appreciably different than Buffett did? No.
I'm not saying I hate the guy, but the reason people get emotional about him is because of the circumstances of when they listened to it, not necessarily because it was world beating vocals or any of that.

I am pretty sure no one said he was one of the all time great vocalists.
His music is an easy listen, and like you said, folks relate it to good times. It's tailgate / BBQ / drunk on your boat music.

Downvoters want to respond to the news that he had cancer?

RIP Jimmy, I've been drinking Margaritas and listening to his music all day in his memory. Had to take a nap mid afternoon, not as young as I once was I guess. There will never be another like Jimmy, seen him probably 12 times or more, the Vegas shows at MGM are a spectacle like few others.

Mr. Cohen perchance?
No- Ms. Grimm, who despite her last name was a phenomenal Algebra teacher, and person. She was in the music industry as a backup singer for years before she became a teacher. She had (and still has- she’s still around) the best stories about singing in Muscle Shoals, AL.

I too, am the son of a son of a sailor.
“The sea’s in my veins, my tradition remains, I’m just glad I don’t live in a trailer.”
If you can’t appreciate the wit and wisdom of this brilliant man’s work, I can’t help you- he was one of a kind and brought joy to many people and was wildly successful in the process. He brought joy to many a person and made a mint doing it. Godspeed,Jimmy.
For the haters: jealous is an evil thing. For the musical snobs: his band was more accomplished and tighter than most for several decades.
For the fans: I share your grief at the loss of this generational talent.

He said it best- these moments we’re left with, may you always remember. These moments are shared by FEW.
If you don’t get it, then don’t drink up, but for me, it’s been a lovely cruise
