It was just better marketing than Prodigy.
I had Prodigy prior to switching to AOL. I think Prodigy’s plan included 8 hours of internet access monthly; additional time would result in charges to the account.
When AOL went to unlimited internet, it seemed like everyone joined within weeks. Prodigy couldn’t recover. It was like Facebook/MySpace.
I still have and use AOL email addresses that I created in 1995 or so.

I better hurry up and use those free 100 hours!

Damn, no more "you got mail" once connected.
Back then it was cool to get an email. It was probably good.
You didn't buy most things online or use it for work back then.

I can only read the first sentence of that because someone picked up the phone when the pic was loading.

I got unlimited copies from the Walmart bins. Especially after I got myself repeatedly kicked off for running AOLHell.

You all think this is funny don't you? Well, laugh now, but you'll be crying one day when everything you own is tied up in the cloud and you will have access to none of it. Bring back copper AOL now!

How many Americans are still using dial up in 2025?
Posted on 8/10/25 at 4:09 pm to danilo
1999-98 period I used dial up internet internationally. It was really a fax system with the same transaction noise. It was a bit better than nothing

Bigger question is who still has an AOL plan? What does that even mean these days

Do you still visit them in their nursing homes?

I salute you, AOL and AIM
You helped me spit hot game at all the ladies in my teenage years. It was so much easier to be brave on the other side of the screen and say shite you would never say in person. I owe AIM at least one long term girlfriend and multiple makeout sessions

I didn't even know it was still around.
