Wow. I’m sorry to hear this. Watching that intro scene is hard for me in a way it wasn’t when I saw it in the theatres. It’s amazing how your perspective changes over time . But really, for a novice actor to nail something ina Kubrick film of all things and for it to become an iconic moment in cinema just tells you what kind of balls the guy had.

Its one of the rare instances that Kubrick, a notorious detail oriented control freak, gave an actor free reign with the role.

with His previous experience as a drill instructor, He probably insulted those newbies like that in the Corps on a daily basis. Yes it was improv'd but he had probably said all of that stuff in real life before.
