Let's say you were around someone who had a stomach virus and a few days later you catch it (in other words, you are aware it is a stomach virus and the only thing you can do for a virus is let it run its course).. Would you go to an urgent care center?

And when people go into urgent care places for something that can't really be treated are doctors encouraged to write a prescription for something? In this situation, the doctor writes one for phenergan.

Maybe if I couldn't stop vomiting to get an antiemetic.

I have had stomach viruses before when I couldnt stop throwing up even when it was supposed to have run its course. They had to give me something to knock me out for a while.

Maybe if it was severe dehydration. I've heard of "patients" going to the ER for runny noses, a basic cold, etc.

Democrats, Mexicans, and meth heads. They are the reason ERs are complete hellholes.

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that they don't know the difference between a virus and bacteria, or that it just needs to run its course. I agree people go unnecessarily all the time, but at least it's not the ER.

When doing triage the ER should be able to turn people away and say if they really need a doc to go to a walkin.

I should state, this wasn't a really bad stomach virus and I would say it would be just above a basic cold, in terms of reasons for going to urgent care.

It just blows my mind when people go to the ER or urgent care for something like a common cold, a headache, etc. I don't like to go to the doctor and it has to be really bad for me to go. If I get a common cold, at no point in my mind do I ever think "should I go to the doctor?"

Some people believe they need to go in to be seen for every little thing. Even if nothing needs to be done.
Time is not a good enough answer for what needs to be done.
People think there is a magic pill for everything

We have severely slowed down the natural selection process.

I don't care why people go to urgent care, but poors should be turned away from hospital ERs if it's not a true medical emergency.

Are there any urgent cares run by actual mds anymore?

I don't have any idea about the business model of urgent care centers, but is that the case? An investment group or an investor opens them up, they hire a doctor who probably went to medical school in the Caribbean (I assume they would be cheaper to hire)? And medical assistants who are learning on the job making just above minimum wage?

I don't even think they hire that. Just NPs

Had a lady bring in 2 young kids to the ER yesterday for 1 night of diarrhea. She ended up leaving AMA because she had to wait so long. But she would have been pissed regardless when I would have walked into the room and told her there are no meds needed and just to make sure they keep drinking fluids.

People need reassurance that they are gonna be ok. Even if it cost $100 per visit.

Absolutely. However, I truly believe some of these people are so stupid that they truly don't know any better.

Anybody should be, not just poors. But then you run the risk that they turn them away and it actually is a medical emergency. I'm not sure of the answer to all of this but the current way of ER's being used for every little thing is absurd and has to stop.

So in order words, there are people who go in and unless the doctor prescribes them something, they will not be happy?

It should just be common sense.. If you are having any type of stomach issues, stay hydrated (gatorade, pedialyte, etc) an eat yogurt possibly take probiotics to replace what your body lost. I can see if it is something that has gone on for a few days or something, but not as soon as it starts happening.

Never happen. But if it did, that one in a million case would die and it would be a shite storm.
