I love Lee, but this is untrue about Sherman and Grant....and comparing any pre-Ww1 general to a WW2 general would result the same.

People look for logic in the world. People want to refute stupid things like taking statues down as if that actually solves any problem.

Meh, symbolic but still fruitless actions happen all the time.

Like I said, the whole thing is dumb.

I think if it gets taken down it should go in a museum along with other confederate memorials.

Just like the statue in New Orleans that ended up in a parking lot and hasn't moved since it was taken down? The original plan was to put that one in a museum, too. What museum are you going to stick a monument that size in? There isn't one in the United States that could hold it efficiently.

Every statue related to the Confederacy can be taken down and guess what? SLAVERY is still part of our history as a country!!! You can not rewrite history just because it fits your narrative. People are dumb!

99% of the people with a strong opinion about a statue either way are typically full of shite.
I’m not exactly sure how I feel about this statement.

Just seems weird to have statues of Confederate generals. There is no reason to honor them like that.

There are museums that hold a bunch of tanks, planes, minisubs, dinosaurs, cars etc. I’m sure one could hold a fricking statue.

Don't bring logic into this.

That thing isn't likely headed for a museum

Well he did also happen to be a traitor and a liar too there Bob

You onlu consider him a traitor because he refused to lead an army against the people of his home state. Consider what you would do in such a situation.

I have never heard him described as a liar. Can you elaborate?

but let me make a distinction here - this is not discarding history, and to assume so is to confuse history and historical memory.

this does not excise lee from the history books or historical narratives, only a memorial that commemorates lee's memory in a particular fashion. that is what is being removed, and that is what was removed at lee circle as well. history persists, but a particular memorialization, commemoration, and indeed glorification of that historical memory is removed.

You think statue removal is the end game?

It’s a shot across the bow of the culture- a provocation. One of thousand of provocations- all going in one direction. All totally unnecessary in every sense. And as the Bullying scorecard gets more lopsided the culture swings back in reaction . Don’t be shocked when it does. It always does.

It’s a step in the right direction. These individuals fought to keep black people ENSLAVED. Yes it’s history, but it toxic and shouldn’t be idolized.
