Dude, lunch wasn’t even 50 cents when I was in school. Are you 80? It’s more like $3.50 a day now
Dude doesn’t have any kids but is all up in this thread. School lunch was about 2.50 when I was in school, had 3 other close age siblings. Parents told us to bring lunches from home, but all my friends ate cafeteria lunch so I disobeyed my parents a lot. I also ate school breakfast when I wasn’t supposed to, not my parents fault.
Also the only thing we had at home to bring for lunch were cold cut sandwiches and pbnj. Got old real quick

Lafourche Parish is about $1.65 day. There's free and reduced lunch but we dont qualify for that.

Meh. Thinking you should punish the people actually fricking up instead of their kids isn't a "consequence-free" response.
We had a truancy kid get summoned to court this last week, but only his Mom showed up. He's 14 and mentally disabled. When they asked her where he was her reply was, "He's grown enough to deal with himself". They should've locked her arse up on the spot and took away the disability check she's been drawing on him to give to a foster family.

Do you not understand that the people this is impacting aren’t poor? They get free lunch.
This impacts kids that have parents that can actually afford lunch because they make enough money and don’t qualify for free lunch. They’ve probably also received numerous reminders. We also get an automated call with a voice mail when my kids balence goes under $5

Free/reduce lunch requirements doesn’t factor in life and other obligations/outside debt. Not defending it but shite happens

Honestly this usually has little to do with lunches and is normally kids charging junk food and cokes, low income lunches are free.
Then stop allowing kids to get that crap through the lunch line.
There are so many simple solutions to this “problem”. It’s absurd that schools are resorting to shaming kids.
My wife works In the office at my kids school so I can give a bit of clarification on this.
1. Even if a kid has a zero or negative balance in their school lunch account, by law the school still has to serve that child a lunch. However, the kid cannot get extras with that lunch like ice cream or sweet tea if their account is empty. The child also cannot get breakfast if they do not have and money in their account. As for cokes, they do not allow any carbonated drinks in the lunch room. Kids aren't even allowed to bring them from home if I remember correctly.

Not if it's the kids own fault. I'll draw the line if this is a parental issue, but if it's trying to get free snacks? Yea shame the piss out of them. Our society needs fewer adults who think they can live off the earnings of others guilt free.
Like I said, don’t sell concessions in the lunch line. Sell them in a separate “vending” area. That’s what my son’s HS does. Cash only.
The schools are the ones creating this problem by selling kids junk food on credit. It’s insane.
As for lunches, if you really want to put it on the kids then just don’t let them eat. But a better solution would be to simply have people pay for their kids’s lunches through property taxes, just like they do with the rest of their schooling.

Substanceless ad hominem
Failing to hold people accountable for their actions is a long term detriment to both themselves and society at large.

You didn’t even know how much school lunch is. If you are paying .50cents, you are indeed poor. Poor

I don't know what students pay, but I do know that at the school where my wife works, employees pay $3.50 for a full lunch.

If kids are required to have lunch by law, then just fund it via property taxes. Everyone eats and we don’t have this nonsense of punishing kids to compel their parents to pay.

They generally charge twice what the kids pay for adults
