I carry an umbrella so I can be a gentleman and keep the females in my presence from getting wet from the rain.

I bought one of these for $25 on Amazon. It looks like the one at the top.
It literally is an invention that you ask yourself "Why the hell didn't the guy who invented this do it this way from the start?"
I can't speak to the longevity of it, cause I've only had it a short time. But its been pretty damn handy thus far.

I've never used one but wouldn't closing like that after getting wet cause it to mold mildew?

I haven't had much opportunity to use it--maybe 2 or 3 times, but so far so good.

DOES IT GO MOULDY IF STORED AWAY WITH WATER TRAPPED IN IT?
No. The canopy is a breathable fabric with hydrophobic coating, causing water to bead and roll off the canopy rather than being absorbed into the material.
However, it is always recommended, as with conventional umbrellas that after use, they should be dried out.
DOES IT RUST?
No, we use rust resistant materials. However it is recommended, as with conventional umbrellas that after use, it is left to dry.

I can't imagine these being as effective as the giant golf umbrella I use. The wife and I can walk side x side under that thing and never get a drop of rain on us.

I buy the $5 black ones at Home Depot. I only wear a raincoat if I'm in the boat, duck blind or the woods. Otherwise I sweat so much wearing them I just as soon stand in the rain without anything.

It's not super big, but it's very handy for getting in or out of the car without slinging water everywhere.
