Special Report: In Louisiana jail, deaths mount as mental health pleas unheeded"

It's long, but very interesting. It's a hard question as to what needs to be done about these mentally ill people on the margins of society.

It's at least a two month wait to see the psychiatrist to get medication prescribed.

Imagine if you needed your psych pills and had to wait two months to see the person who could get them for you.

Took me a week to get my prescribed seizure pills. They had the bottles, and my doc even called the jail. Their answer was, "take what we have, or deal with it". I don't think they have actual nurses and docs on staff, they just call them nurses and docs. The docs come in maybe once a week, and deal with all issues then

More cities need to adopt what San Diego did, which is to create a place for police to bring people to get stabilized and back on mental health meds, instead of jail. There is no jail which is ever going to be equipped to deal with mental illness issues, largely because of length of stay. Mentally ill people committing hundreds of municipal offenses every year can't be treated if they're spending 3 days in before being released to rinse and repeat.

They missed the story about the hundreds getting killed each year by their fellow citizens in EBR.

Lucky you.

Took me two months just to see the doc.

Because everybody in jail is in there for murder.

BR tried to do this twice in the last 3 years, and it was voted down both times. Once by the council and once by the public.

I kept badgering the pill lady every time she came around, and I guess someone finally told them that seizures are not good

In fairness, the doctors showed up once a week. The psych once a month.

The frustration on those people's faces was unbelievable.

Couldn't imagine not being able to do your job and help people because there was literally no support from anywhere.

I like how they act like we aren’t treating mental health at Angola. We put them in jail. It’s the perfect place for crazy people

Didn't we have a tax on the ballot two years ago to provide a place for these folks in EBR besides the prison? At least a temporary shelter with the necessary resources for the mentally ill.

It got shot down. But I know we as a parish were trying to separate the mentally ill from the intentional criminals and better care for them.

YES. I voted for it. I have an older mentally ill cousin who would/could benefit from a program that would separate and treat a schizophrenic person who pees himself on a bus and refuses to get off b/c demons are around him shite(he hadn't taken meds).

These people have no business being locked up with actual criminals.

I had court-ordered AA when I was younger, and this guy said he drank because the voices in the corners of his ceiling would yell at him all day unless he was drunk enough not to hear them. He got arrested because he walked into a Waffle House, and started throwing everything on the floor. They let him out without any help or prescribing meds. How does that guy go through life normally if nobody helps him?

Mental health is a big issue that people like to sweep under the rug. It's an unfortunate part of society, and politicians don't want to deal with it

Well at my last job with very expensive insurance it took at least a month to get a meeting with an insurance accepted psychiatrist. Had an employee go through it.

However, start having seizures and see how quick they discharge you to home confinement while you wait on your court date.

About 10 years ago I had a patient in local jail awaiting court (poverty couldn’t make bail). He took 1mg xanax 3x day then temazepam at bedtime. His psychiatrist wasn’t responding to his wife’s calls to contact the jail and provide his Rx list. So she started constant calling our office, primary care. She went to the jail and picked up a medical history form, brought it to our office. I filled it out and faxed it over, they still didn’t give him any Rx. At that amount he was taking, he could die stopping cold turkey. Well sure enough that night he started having uncontrolled seizures. They sent him to the ER, and also sent him home to wait on his court date.

Maybe he shouldn't have done LSD.

I don't like my money going to help people that aren't in jail, much less people in jail.

Our culture still has people thinking of mental illness as just some weakness that someone has. We need to start changing the overall stigma around mental health issues.
