Looking to either buy or retrofit a pair of new housings for an 09 Sierra.

I'm not going with cheap Ebay crap. I already have a new set of HID/Ballast/Bulbs.

I am reading that Morimoto projectors are the best available but that would have me paying over $1000 for a set from the Retrofit source

Has anyone opened up a set of housings and built their own?

If you want to constantly get flashed by everyone on the road over the age of 70, save your money and just drive with your brights on.

Why all that trouble? Just bolt a LED lightbar to it and blind everyone.
And I'm not over 70.

I suggest contacting The Retrofit Source for your thoughts.

Great choice.

Yes. My Colorado and wife’s accord we were able to bake them open. Painted the inside of the housings black and removed the reflectors when we did. My bagged Colorado I replaced the top reflectors with reflective Flur De Lis. Pretty easy just time consuming. Take your time resealing them so you don’t get moisture in them the first time it rains.

My dads 2009 Sierra we had to dremel them open. It sucked but they sealed fine when we were done.

I missed this in your OP. You can get projectors from salvaged vehicle if cost is a concern. I’d recommend The Retrofit route though.

Overall retrofits don’t glare like cheap arse HIDs shoved in halogen housings that blind everyone.

Morimotos are great, I have used their Mini-H1s and the FX-R projectors. Also whole lotta stupid that people dont realize an HID swap with the projectors doesnt blind people

yeah, I thought that I explained it clearly in the OP that I was not interested in putting HID or LED bulbs in factory housings .
Also, many projectors aren't designed to handle HID. I already have a nice set of 10,000 k HIDs and ballasts and resistors. Thanks for the information

That's a very high temp bulb, I usually go for the 5K bulbs, the higher the kelvin of the bulbs, the less light output.

10k is blue as shite. I would seriously recommend 5-6k unless you want to look like a ricer. 55w ballasts you can get away with 8k but they’ll absolutely have a blue tint and you’ll lose output.

I just stuck HIDs in my 4runner's projector housings. The key is to make sure you re-aim them correctly so the cutoff is where it should be.

And yes, I know the cutoff isn't as sharp as it would be with true HID projectors, but the 4runner projectors do a fairly decent job. For the $100ish I spent on the HIDs they have far far better output than the stock halogens, and I can count the times I've been flashed on one hand in 2.5 years. Not worth the extra ~$900 for the retrofit if you ask me.

The $900 I quoted is for plug and play high end housings. I'm wanting to buy new housings and install the Morimoto projectors myself. I found a pair of housings like I posted in the OP for $300. I can spend another $200 for the FX-Rseries projectors and am hoping to Install them where the crappy projector lenses reside

Retrofitting provides an OEM cutoff and light pattern. Doesn't blind anyone anymore than a vehicle with factory HID/LED.

I should have clarified a little in my original post when I said I had used them, I have but I dont recommend them, they were a much harder install, for what was marginally better output.

You're doing it right.

Making the housings work with new bulbs is key.

Most of these jacklegs just put $39.95 bulbs in the old housings that look and work like shite.
