Co-workers have a habit of collecting money and giving cash to people who are retiring (maybe 150 to 300 bucks). These people are retiring with a decent pension.

IMO, if you collect it should be for a thoughtful gift or don't collect at all. I've contributed before but it bothers me.

Would you give? Not give?

Gift card to Chili's. It's the gift that keeps on giving you the shits.

Retirement means they have enough money to no longer have to work. I'd say screw that but then again I'm a POS.

That's trashy. Put some thought into it and give the person a gift.

1. Giving cash as a gift is trashy and lazy

2. If it is decided the person should receive something material at retirement, it should be something to remind them of the significance or accomplishments while working there.

3. Personally, I think a nice lunch or reception is more in line and for myself, just meet me at the bar after my last day, get me drunk and I'll tell everyone to frick off!

Giving someone cash as a retirement gift is pretty tacky if you ask me. I would not contribute.

I think, in lieu of something material, a nice send-off lunch/party would be sufficient.

We used to do this at my last job and it was great. Right up until one guy's wife got hammered at his retirement lunch (she had a drinking issue anyway) and stood up and ripped into the entire management staff. I am telling you, she had dates and incidents memorized and railed on them non-stop for about 15 minutes. It was awesome. The top bosses finally just stood up and left the restaurant. It was a once in a lifetime experience. We don't do those lunches anymore.

I think that is stupid. Having said that, I'd rather throw in $10 or $20 than be considered the office a-hole.

I agree it should go towards a really expensive bottle of wine or whiskey if it's going to be done at all.

That's weird as hell to give them cash. If you collect a couple hundred, but them a $200 bottle of Scotch. Give them something cool, that they'd feel guilty about buying for themselves.

I probably wouldn't do cash for someone getting a pension. I would do something else, maybe a rocking chair.
