San Francisco DA drops charges in violent robbery of older Asian man

quote:

The San Francisco district attorney’s office said Monday it is withdrawing charges and pursuing a “restorative justice” model against a 20-year-old man arrested in the robbery of an elderly Asian man in his 70s that was captured on a video that went viral.

quote:

District Attorney Chesa Boudin campaigned heavily last year on a progressive criminal justice platform that included restorative justice, which relies on reconciliation with victims over punishment of offenders.

quote:

Dwayne Grayson, 20, was booked last week on suspicion of robbery, elder abuse, a hate crime charge and probation violation following the Feb. 22 incident. Police say he recorded the robbery, which included someone yelling a racial slur.

quote:

Later, the victim was shown weeping. Several people were standing around in the Bayview neighborhood, but none intervened and some jeered and mocked him.

This is the dumbest most infuriating stupid bullshite ever. San Fran headed for anarchy. Thanks Chesa Boudin!

Only way restorative justice works is in conjunction with actual punishment.

I can understand that imprisonment won't help a convicted criminal, but what is ever done to help the victim?
Why are some more concerned with the future of the criminal, yet couldn't care less about the victim?

the Federal "violation of civil rights" laws were used in the '60s to end run around racist Southern juries

can they be used here?

As is usual for activist politicians, when they confront a legitimate issue instead of correcting it they create another, even worse one. It never fails

It’s almost like you went out of your way to avoid a link or posting THE MOST PERTINENT PART.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports Boudin pulled back the charges after having a conversation with the victim. The victim has not been identified or spoken publicly about the incident.

“We’ve been in conversation with the victim who expressed interest in a restorative justice outcome in this case,” said Alex Bastian, a spokesman for the district attorney’s office. “Specifically, against the young person who videoed the incident. We respect victims and their desires and we will explore a restorative justice outcome.”

Bastian said the office has the option to file charges if restorative justice does not work.

What’s it like being intellectually dishonest?

So when it inevitably happens again, you've just created another victim.

How does someone so dumb figure out how to use the internet? You're extremely dumb. Like really, really, fricking dumb. Incredibly. Dumb.

Why should incarceration be about “helping” the criminal? It’s a punishment. Make the fricker do manual labor and let him be punished

The whole rehabilitation angle of incarceration is stupid. Make prison miserable so it’s a place to be avoided. Maybe then we’ll see a drop in recidivism.

It’s worth a shot, I mean maybe this turns the guys life around who knows. What is for certain is if you throw him in the penal system he’ll be a criminal for life.
