Y’all do know there are a ton of companies that are doing this not in the restaurant business right?
I own a business and a lot of our distributors and vendors are doing the same.

Losing at the track are we? The days are numbers for half these mediocre food places.

Yes. Eating oyt in DC was a shock.

Those fees have gone up since covid. Credit card companies are taking advantage of people using cards more as well as taking on premium cards
I own a shop and credit card fees used to not be that much of a concern when almost half of the transactions were cash.
Now the charges are higher and 90% or more of the transactions are cards.
And I'm paying tariff charges on lots of things, shipping costs seem to rise daily and there's been a huge drop of European/Canadian tourists the past year (who have traditionally been a big chuck of our sakes).
It's getting noticeably harder to not be a corporate conglomerate.

Why not just increase the cost of everything 3% and not say anything to your customers so as not to annoy weirdos like me? Knowing about this policy makes me not want to return to that restaurant.
because weirdos like you are going to bitch regardless. So either they up prices which you will bitch about or they try to explain the charges, which you obviously also bitch about.
A better question is why someone like you who wants to bitch about restaurant prices bothers to go out? Why don't you just cook at home?

Here's another move going on. I was paying my cellphone bill and internet bill with a credit card online. Both dropped my bill amount if I paid by direct deposit from my bank account. It works out to a bigger discount than the 3 or 4 percent charged by credit card processors.

I have and many others have also. The restaurants are not nearly as full in my area as they were 5-10 years ago.
If more people spoke up and voted with their wallet maybe things could get better for the consumer. For some reason most people just bend over and take it with a smile.

It wouldn't just run cost plus?

Well someone has a case of the grumpies.

And if they screw up that is your money missing until things are sorted out.
In that instance I think of the cc fee as insurance.

They’re calling it a “temporary tariff surcharge.” Bet my left nut there’s zero future credit.

If I ever come across a place that does this take whatever percentage out of the tip and circle it with an arrow pointing to it.
To go to ownership/management and complain that their tip is less because you are using it to supplement the operating charge.
What a sleezebag.

I mean, what’s the other alternative? Just keep paying and nothing changes?
Is it shitty for the waitress? Of course. But it’s quite literally the only action the customer can take that provides tangible feedback

Tell them you will no longer be a customer there and why.
I know it'll never happen, but if enough people do it maybe they'll adjust. Or close.
But don't take it away from the server. How dumb is that?

If it never hits the bottom line, it’s all bullshite. And by doing that and actually never going back your putting even less in the servers pocket overall
Posted on 10/9/25 at 12:13 pm to AmosMosesAndTwins
Of course not. You didnt see a credit when fuel prices went down either. Under the previous ownership we had a call with people from supply chain. They were saying we were getting higher prices on beef from Mexico. I chimed in that we didnt have tariffs with Mexico on beef under the USMCA so why were we getting higher prices due to that. I was told they would bring some others in on that, loop around, and read me in. fricking corporate speak man

Put yourself in the server's position and then get back to me.
