A transaction.

I'm a generous tipper, but I'm not tipping a kiosk.

If I ever come across a place that does this take whatever percentage out of the tip and circle it with an arrow pointing to it.
I had a business dinner set up for 12 at a restaurant on Long Island that I set up about two weeks ahead of time. Someone I work with who lives on Long Island suggested I try it out first as she had heard spotty things about the place. So when I flew in I went to restaurant and sat at the bar. I saw that there was a 3% fee added and a mandatory 20% tip added for group service. I asked for the manager and discretely stated that I could in no way support paying them 3% on top of an expected $2200 meal. He said he couldn't and that the owner would take it out of his pay if he did. So I told him I was paying for my drink, but to cancel the reservation and let the owner know that his policy cost him a nice little piece of business. The manager said he agreed, comped my beer and the next morning, before I could make another reservation,I received a text from the restaurant letting me know that due to the size of our group, no service fee would be added, other than the 20% tip and to reconfirm before noon, which I did.

You have to fight with your pocketbook and not reward businesses that do this.

I’m seeing a “6% tariff surcharge” on invoices from one of our vendors.

They charged a 10% “recovery fee” and a 20% “service charge”, and you still left a tip?

Why? Was the service giving you a bowl of soup that remarkable?

No matter what they do with the prices everyone will gripe about it. I can guarantee you all businesses have increasing costs.

So they don't have to buy all new menus with the new prices.

This is probably the truth.

Instead of adding $0.10 to every item and printing all new menus they are just doing this.

And this will most likely cover the increased credit card fees these businesses have to pay.

When I see SHHHIIITTTEEE like this on my bill, I pull out the pen.

I circle the b.s. charge, then draw an arrow to a 'scratch area.' I then note a 20% tip - the b.s.%charge to get a new tip %amount which I then draw and arrow to the tip area showing a decreased tip due to this absolute B.S.

I'm not having it.

The consumer continues to take it up the shorts, smile and shrug their shoulders. I hate these extra fees bs. I don’t like the 3% CC fee either.

If I know they charge any extra fee I don’t patronize them. Otherwise it comes out any tip I might have given. I’ve even noted it on the receipt!

Restaurants need to add it in to pricing on everyone rather than blatantly tell you they’re adding a tax or penalty to your order. They have operating fees and processing fees? Well so do I.

Ahahaha! I do the same thing I’m such a petty guy. If I tip 20% I write 20% and circle it then write the tip and total on the line.

Then I circle the stores “20%” that is including me tipping on tax and write WTF! I have zero issues tipping 15 for just basic service or even 10% or less and write what I was not satisfied with on it.

I went to DC last year and EVERY RESTAURANT had a 5-15% service charge that "wasnt a tip" was very odd.

I f this was known up front, I would begrudgingly pay it….however, since they tried to sneak it into the fine print at the bottom of the menu, I would light their ssses up on yelp, etc. and not eat there again.

why tf did you tip 25% on a single food item that they already charged you a 20% gratuity on? Actually, they charged you more than 20% on as they used the service fee to pad the subtotal before force tipping.

WTF are you talking about?
They did not charge 20% gratuity of the padded subtotal. They charged 20% of the price of the single food item.
20% of $16 is $3.20?

Lol. You should only tip a few people:

Your server when you dine in at a restaurant that takes your order at your table and provides you actual service.

Your barber.

Your delivery person if you order food delivery.

Your driver if you take a Uber/Lyft.

Hotel staff other than front desk agents that directly provide you assistance.

Anyone beyond that should never be tipped except for extreme circumstances.

I figured that out after I posted, lol... didn't see a need to edit. I made an assumption based on how the receipt was stacked.

Bingo.

If my service was good, then when I get the check and discover the fee, I make the mental note that I won't ever be back...but I won't short a server who did a great job.

People keep referencing having to get menus reprinted. Why not get smart and go to digital menus? Scan a QR at the table to see our menu. Everybody "wins".

Because then you wouldn't have anyone over 70 patronizing your restaurant.
