Researchers Pinpoint Reason Infants Die From SIDS

SIDS refers to the unexplained deaths of infants under a year old, and it usually occurs while the child is sleeping. According to Mayo Clinic, many in the medical community suspected this phenomenon could be caused by a defect in the part of the brain that controls arousal from sleep and breathing. The theory was that if the infant stopped breathing during sleep, the defect would keep the child from startling or waking up.
The Sydney researchers were able to confirm this theory by analyzing dried blood samples taken from newborns who died from SIDS and other unknown causes. Each SIDS sample was then compared with blood taken from healthy babies. They found the activity of the enzyme butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) was significantly lower in babies who died of SIDS compared to living infants and other non-SIDS infant deaths. BChE plays a major role in the brain’s arousal pathway, explaining why SIDS typically occurs during sleep.

How amazing would it be if they can develop a blood test that identified high risk infants?

Saw this the other day and it is really good news, if it proves to be the case.
I would hope it will also be a solace to the parents out there who have lost a child to SIDS and were convinced it was their fault.

So maybe it’s not crazy to stare at your newborn while they sleep and make sure they’re still breathing.

It would be pretty cool. I’m assuming that would be the next step if they are able to further confirm this as being the reason.

I hope they can really pin point it and we can make progress.
That said, I wonder if the actual number of SIDS deaths if they're able to do so will decline, because it has become a rather catchall category

I lost a sister to SIDs over 40 years ago. It was the most heartbreaking thing to witness as a small child. I've never seen anything sadder than adults trying to deal with the loss of a child.

Yep, totally amazing to be told that your baby is at a higher risk of dying every time she falls asleep, and absolutely nothing can be done about it.

My wife does this to me while I'm napping - but I'm 70.

We checked on ours constantly through the night. There are more horrible ways to lose a child, but I'm sure this has to be one of the most gut-wrenching.

maybe I'm just dumb, but why wouldn't that have been the very first thing they did after like the 3rd or 4th kid died of SIDS? It's written like they just now got around to trying that out

YET.
This is huge. If it can be identified, then we can work to find a solution.
Imagine a heart monitor that vibrates or provides stimulus to re-wake the child.

They have this. My two youngest sisters wore it while sleeping. If they stopped breathing, it would alarm so loudly that it would wake the entire house.

My sister lost her first child to SIDS. Worst funeral I've ever attended.

When my wife was expecting our first in 2004 and somebody brought up SIDS, I looked it up. I was all WTF, THEY CAN JUST DIE FOR NO REASON!?!?!?

Breathing monitors that sound an alarm and vibrate already exist

Yet.
Understanding the cause is the first step to identifying a way to neutralizing it.
