There's at least one thread a week on this topic.

Except to turn you over to a collection agency and have the non-payment of the fine end up on your credit report.

ETA: My son got a red light camera ticket while driving my Jeep. I have not paid this because it seems to me the city actually has no proof of him running the red light. He apparently was turning right on red, but did not come to a complete stop. However, all they have is a still photo of the Jeep in the right turn lane while the light is red. How do they know he did not stop?

Does Baton Rouge still have them unmarked or do they have signs up saying it’s photo enforced? Either way, why do you keep re-electing politicians who keep them up? Vote them out. A lot of state legislatures have banned them statewide.

I think WillCover put together the first, most comprehensive response.

TL;DR - don't pay. Challenge if they hit credit. It will evaporate.

Does anyone know how much of a cut the private camera company gets from these fines? I think this is an industry that needs to be shut the frick down.

There are signs. BR doesn't do anything if you don't pay them though.

They’ll send a second letter via mail that is coercive and threatening about paying the fine and late fee. I got one 7 years ago at the Coursey intersection and simply tore it up and threw it away.

The legality behind this scam is completely asinine. They send you a fine via mail and expect you to pay without mitigation? Completely unconstitutional.

This is not true. Baton rouge's ordinance has no repercussions for non payment. A councilman went on record a few years ago encouraging people not to pay. Garbage can is where the ones I receive end up.

yeah, and I told the collections bitch to pound sand. When I bought a truck two years ago, the finance guy and I had a good laugh about that. 840 credit score and the only negative marks were the two outstanding camera tickets in Gretna and New Orleans.

Can you not challenge an alleged debt on your credit report and force the debtee to produce proof that you agreed to a debt?

They don't even do that. Just threaten to. My wife has a few that are years old.

They eventually send to a collections company, but throw that away also. They can't legally do anything other than send threatening letters to the home the vehicle is registered too. I wasn't even driving the car in one of the pictures.

Does the same apply to speeding camera tickets?
