I bought a 2015 Hyundai Accent off a thrifty car rental lot. It was a year old with 30k miles when I bought it. I've put 45k more on it in 2 years w zero issues. I only paid 8500 so it's already been well worth what I paid. Gets great gas mileage.

My son just bought a Hyundai Ioniq. It’s a really nice hybrid and gets almost 60 mpg. He drives an hour and 20 minutes one way.

I drive 91 miles to work, 91 miles back. Drive a Cadillac XTS, averages 34mpg, mostly Interstate driving, 78-80mph. Very comfortable, Bose stereo, heated/cooled seats, and after .a few months in rental, you can buy one for 50% of original MSRP...

I need a truck for work but would love to get by with a 4 banger accord. Reliable and great mpg. Big enough to not feel super cramped like the civic or corolla.

Toyota Echo.
It was the gas version prototype of the pruis, but once the prius started selling, they discontinued the echo (in the US).
Great great great great little car, all gas, no problems, zero maintenance, 40 mpg, and you can grab one for $3000.
I would still be driving mine for commuting if a dumb bitch didn't total it.

If you are driving 90 miles comfort over cost.
This isn’t the 70’s, most cars these days can be run into the ground with routine maintenance.
If you already have a car, don’t buy a “commuter” car. The math doesn’t pencil out.

We don’t live in LA where insurance is insanely expensive. It’s a beater car, it’ll get dents and dings. If it gets wrecked, well..it was a beater.

Hyundai Elantra is a good choice, but I don’t really like the newest body style that just came out. Atkinson cycle engine with a 6-speed tranny. No CVT.
The new Honda Insight looks like a normal Accord, FYI. Another good choice.
