Is laying cable an acceptable reason to miss a flight? Nature called this morning at the airport and I have to find another flight to Dallas. Dang

I've never missed one. I'm cheap so I get the "you're screwed if you don't make the flight fares".

This is just like the people I have seen get fired for poor attendance. That last absence did not get them fired. It was all the other poor excuses that got them fired.
In your case, no 5 min shite storm made you miss a flight. Your poor planning and preparation for being somewhere on time made you miss that flight. The best part of the story is that some dude who did plan and got there early got your seat!
As one of my kids teachers used to say "Early is On Time."

First time: took different airlines. First from ATL to Dallas, connecting from Dallas to Mazatlan. First flight was delayed, had to buy two counter tickets on a 3rd airline.
Second time: left iPad and laptop in taxi. Called taxi to return (which took the cab driver 45 min to return). Wife took initial flight from ATL to Puerto Rico, caught next morning flight standby and met her at resort 10 hours later.

I went to the wrong airport once. That was when I learned American Airlines flew out of both Bush and Hobby.
Same day free flight changes these days, so missed flights aren't a thing anymore. I do reschedule a lot of them.

Big City Problems. I do have a funny about the wrong airport. A long time ago, back using DOS-like computers, my BIL just starting working at a travel agency (look them up, millenials) and he prided himself on booking himself a flight.
He was trying to book a flight to Daytona Beach and ticketed a flight to DAY, which was going to send him to Dayton, OH.
Only realizing his error on the day of the flight, he had to change it at the airport that morning, to the correct airport, DAB.

I chuckle at the guys who are frantically racing through the airport, dragging their wheeled luggage up the escalator...
