Not sure which part of that stresses your brain. The suburb argument is always "I'm really not far from the entertainment of the city when I want it." The same goes for when city residents when they want access to open space, and it will take me even less time during lower traffic quarantine, which you seem to want to factor into your decision-making.

Isn’t this exactly what NYC can’t do right now?

i Suppose we have very different ideas on what “space” is

I don’t see the benefit of having a slightly bigger yard. I grew up on big acreage on a river so suburbs are just a shitty compromise to me

I get the appeal of living in the city if you are young and single or married without kids. Suburbs generally offer a better quality of life for families in just about every metric though.

For sure. People talk about entertainment...I have two little boys, they provide more “entertainment” than I know what to do with.

I loved living in the city, I certainly understand the appeal. But the extra cost would not be worth it for me, and at this moment that is even more true.

Using Manhattan as a proxy for urban living is a little disingenuous

I suppose. I have a golf course, hundreds of acres of woods and a river within a 5 minute walk of my front door. My lot is more like half an acre.

Staying 6 ft away from people isn’t a chore at all right now. Not all suburbs are the same. I never understand the appeal of living in neighborhoods that most of y’all consider suburbs

I can drive to the grocery in about 5 minutes and have a vehicle to put my stuff in. Walking to the grocery sounds terrible not sure why people brag on being able to do that.

I know I am much happier at this very moment that I live in my current house than my last residence which was a multi unit dwelling in the city

I'm in the city, and have a massive deck, separate seating area with a fire pit, then an elevated section of grass that I haven't decided what to do with yet.

We don't have to act like it's "900 sqft apartment on floor 4 with a tiny balcony" vs "3500 sqft sprawling home on a half acre." Plenty of space to be had in the city if you can afford it.

I have the same in the city.

I have a giant Hill country greenbelt with waterfalls and hiking trails essentially in my backyard. On my way down to the massive park on the water close to downtown, I pass like 30 other parks.

So living in a city is awesome, just not big cities? Like less urban cities? Sub-urban, maybe?

The problem with this debate is everyone jumps to the extremes, every suburb isn't a DR Horton tract subdivision where you have to drive 10 minutes just get out and every urban dwelling unit isn't a $1 million 3rd floor one bedroom walk-up in Chelsea.

For instance, I have several Baton Rouge friends who live off Perkins btw City Park and the overpass area. They are in an awesome City subdivision but walkable (5 mins) to a great park and tons of cool stuff to do, and even accessible to downtown via transit if they want. Give me that all day over almost any suburb in America.

I’d rather have this be a five minute walk from my house than a little yard

the byob italian place next door to this is pretty good too.

Best classic Italian food in the city, but they definitely subscribe to the European style of service. Slowest service of any place in town.

I think using NYC lifestyle during a global pandemic that feasts on population density as some sort of detraction of broad city life for cities that aren't remotely similar to NYC during normal times (much less during said pandemic) is dumb. I'm not going to waste time providing answers to your numerous hypotheticals. I'd rather be where I am than in a suburban, semi-rural, or very rural area of the southeastern US.

Well no shite. Are you a five minute walk to all of these? and how many humans would you walk by to get to them?

Some of y’all are funny. You have more woods than a suburban area? All of the sudden everyone That lives in a city, that is walking distance to bars, restaurants and groceries stores, also has a single family home, a backyard and access to 30+ empty parks all within walking distance. I bet it doesn’t even cost anymore to live in this paradise

Again what are the benefits to living in a city right now?

Lots of high end booze stores that are open

More grocery options and delivery options

Better take out options

I agree I wouldn't want to be in a condo right now, but you asked, so there are a few I think.

I live in a 6 million person city

I have more trees here than in any suburb in Louisiana, most likely. Everyone around me has a decent sized front and back yard (much bigger backyards than I've seen in places like Plano and Frisco). We have sidewalks and large, forested neighborhood parks.

These neighborhoods were around for decades before suburban sprawl copied the features. It's not like suburbs invented the concept of tree lined neighborhoods and yards.

well to be fair we have a 2,700 acre park located close by which is one of the best parks in the country.
