When people are saying the virus is "fake," I don't think many people are saying it doesn't exist. It is obviously real, and obviously is capable of killing certain people who have it.
When they are saying it's "fake," I think most are referring to certain political parties using the virus to further their own agendas. And they believe the actions being taken are doing more harm than good.

Is it possible to believe it’s real but also believe the response to it by our leadership on every level has been awful, thus making everyone suspicious of all things being told to us at this point?

The response to the virus is disproportionate to the threat.
This is a mild virus to all but a well know high risk group.
Shutting down the lives of healthy people for this threat makes no sense from a health or logic perspective.
