I received the book The Forgotten 500 by Gregory A. Freeman for Christmas. I'm about 60 pages in and so far it is a very good read. It's a true story about many American airmen who went down over Yugoslavia on their way back to Italy from bombing raids on Romanian oil fields. The story was apparently kept secret for a long time after the war, but it is well told and I recommend it based on what I've read so far.

I'm gonna sort of go a different route here and suggest The Passenger by Ulrich Alexander Boschwitz.
It is historical fiction written by a German Jewish man in 1938. It is about a Jewish business owner in Berlin who has to flee the country after Kristallnacht. It is thrilling because you're reading a piece of historical fiction written before the actual start of the war and the worst days of the Holocaust.

I’ve found The Second World War by John Keegan to be an outstanding read. Just enough detail to be knowledgeable but not overwhelming. Great insights.
Also Cry Havoc by Joseph Maiolo is a great prelude to the war and how we got there.

I just started The First World War by Keegan. I’ll have to check out this one next.
I would recommend Stalingrad by Antony Beevor.

I just found it on EBR Library Overdrive app. I put a hold on the ebook and audio book. Whichever format comes first will be just fine! Thanks, OP!

Just finished Spearhead by Adam Makos. Was an excellent read re: tank warfare from both American and German perspectives. Was never a dull moment and articulated just how the 3rd AD offenses had a tougher route through Europe than Pattons 2nd AD

I recommend it - the movie, The Great Raid, was based upon this book.

I can.
It’s the story of the Cabanatuan raid, i.e., the liberation of the survivors of the Bataan Death March by the US 6th Rangers in early 1945. Awesome book.

Yeah. I couldn’t put it down. It was brutal though. Just horrific conditions.
