"Re-homing Fee" for adopting dogs

An acquaintance of mine is moving across the country and can't take his dog so he needs to give it up. My little brother's dog died last year so I want to get him a new one.
This dog is a beautiful lab/husky mix about a year old. I figured I'd kill 2 birds with one stone and take in the dog and give it to my brother for his birthday next month as a present and do this guy a favor to see his dog to a good home.
Well this guy is asking for a "re-homing fee" of $100. What the frick is this noise? If he was straight out saying he was selling his dog I probably wouldn't think twice about paying it (even though it's $100 for basically a mut), but to guise it as "re-homing fee" just grates me for some reason. I'll probably pay it anyway because it's the cutest damn dog but frick that guy.

Rehoming fees are common with nearly every dog. Stop being an idiot. Also, a husky/lab is hardly a mut, try buying a pup.

It pays for the costs of the vet visits and immunizations for the dog so you don't have to do it after adopting them. It actually saves you money.

Weird. Usually rehoming fees are done by dog rescues because they take care of vaccinations, often give any belonging with the dog, and most importantly.. they are making SURE that trashballs won't be taking the animal. The fee deters people adopting dogs for the wrong reasons.
If this is just some dude you know, it's weird. You'd be literally doing him a favor.

It sounds like this is a friend to friend thing, not a shelter. The rehoming fee is bullshite in this case.

The dog is this dude's pet and was given vaccinations regardless due to being .. his pet. Unless dude is taking the dog for a round of all that before giving it to OP, the fee is stupid.

I understand the re-homing fees when adopting from the shelter because it helps cover the shelter's costs for health checkups and immunizations before the adoption, but not for this kind of situation. Maybe if he's throwing in a whole bunch of stuff (toys, leash, food, kennel, heartworm meds, etc). Otherwise ask him would he rather see his dog go to a good home or to the shelter?

I am on the fence on this, if it's a bad arse dog and your brother will take them in, what is 100.00 to ensure that especially if the dog is current on bills and there are other things included like bowls, leashes, beds, treats, toys, some food, etc.
Most likely you would pay close to that to buy him a bday present right?
So admit the dog owner is a pile and got a dog with an uncertain future and is unwilling to sacrifice anything in terms of the dog, so show that you are a bigger person and you are capable of the right thing.

He probably wants to make the person show some financial commitment that truly shows they want the dog. A lot of people would want the dog if it were free and it could go to a less than desirable home.

Could he be charging that to make sure whoever takes his dog is serious about giving it a good home?
Is the dog current on all his shots? Is he giving you all the dog stuff with the dog (leashes, dog food, bowls, bed, toys, etc)?

As someone else said, it covers the vet cost, etc. There's also some psychology involved. You're less likely to think of the dog as a throwaway if you paid a little something.

If I had to give my dog away, for any circumstance (and were about to move across the country ourself- a move that is further complicated by our dog but we are going to make it work) I would just be happy to give him/her to a good home where she would be happy. That should be enough "reward" for the owner.

Like I said, if he would have straight up been selling it, it was one thing. But this guy was basically begging for someone to give his dog a good home and when I reached out is when he tried to hit me up with this "fee".
I'm still going to get it, it just rubbed me the wrong way.

If you didn't look like the type of person that eats dog he wouldn't have set the price higher than the market value of dog meat.
Maybe get one of your non-Asian friends to go get the dog.

Then just say you're selling the dog with all the bells and whistles.
If a private owner is listing a dog for adoption, but also collecting a "re-homing fee," it's a bit sketchy.
That being said, if you'd buy the dog for $100 anyway, I'm not sure if it's that big of a deal. Not really a place you want to take a principled stand.
