I've always heard get a cheap one for your first one because you will crash it learning

Great Planes PT-40 is a very good place to start. Easy to build, fly, repair, and upgrade

What stout said. There is a 100% chance you will crash the plane and destroy it.

The cheapest one you can find that is made specifically for learners. You WILL crash it, so you want one that is cheap and designed to be repaired when you do something dumb.
Here are some of the ways I broke mine while learning:
-Ran out of go-juice and stalled it
-Flew it into a two story house and never thought I was going to hit the house
-Wings folded in half
-Didn't secure the battery for the plane's radio and lost control when it disconnected
-Tried to fly it on a gusty day
-Charlie Browned it up into a tree
You want one that is forgiving of stupid.

Things have come a long ways since I learned to build and fly on a .60 size Goldberg Piper Cub. ARFs are so incredibly good these days and CHEAP.

If you're near Baton Rouge, go to Hobby Towne and talk to them. They know their shite when it comes to the planes. They also have a simulator you can practice on.

I would recommend the Avistar.

Get with a club if possible and have someone train you. I also recommend an rc flight simulator. If you practice with that you can gain a huge advantage.

My first was a Dynam Hawk Sky. I’ve actually still never crashed it. I owe that to all the simulator practice I got (an iPad app) and being like rain man. I highly recommend something with a pusher prop (and lots of dihedral) like the hawk sky. It’s nice to have that prop protected for your first few landings. I went through a lot of props learning to land a foamy P-51 that was my second plane. It’s still airworthy too, but it’s got a lot of glue on it.

Been messing with an RC flight sim for a while, ready for the real thing

One of our buddies ought a RC plane when we were all at LSU. He spent a week putting it together and then we all went out to one of the sports fields with a cooler full of beer to see him fly it. We pulled out lawn chairs, cracked open beers and he got it ready and took off. He was in the air maybe five seconds and roared that thing straight into the ground at full throttle and it blew into about fifty pieces. He was furious. We all were like Well that was awesome and went back to our rooms.

Ask OleWarSkuleAlum.
He pretends his RC planes are life size.

RC = remote control. Dag gum I was reading this thread as RC was some brand name of a real plane. Glad I didn't ask how yall survived all those crashes.

Been flying for many years. Get an Ugly Stick - attach a streamer to the back thats as long as the plane.
The streamer slows things down and helps you stay oriented on front to back - harder than it sounds at first.
Go electric - so much easier. You can go “old school” gas later on.
And build them yourself - so much easier to fix when you built it in the first place.

There are kits that look relatively simple to build at Flitetest.com
They are electric but have some slow fliers and controls and such. I was thinking about purchasing one of their kits myself.

They have a whole series of videos for beginners. They have a very good trainer airplane, and if you like crafting, might be a good fit. Otherwise I'd go Hobby Towne.

Don't get the absolute cheapest models. You will crash a lot regardless, but the really cheap planes don't fly worth af so you'll crash a lot more.

I lolled.
Thanks for the honesty!

If you don't have a an experienced pilot to buddy box with a fkight sim is a must it will help you learn orientation. An easy route is something like the hobbyzone champ which can be flown by a child it's only two channel but it must be flown in zero wind. My best suggestion is to join rcgroups.com and go to their beginner section forum and read a lot. You can also find some excellent deals in there for sale forums.
One thing to keep in mind is the FAA is cracking down on any airplanes that weigh more than 8 oz and if you're flying in less than class G airspace meaning within 5 miles of controlled airspace like an airport. The FAA is slowly trying to kill our Hobby in favor of giving the airspace to drone delivery companies like Amazon
