Rare photo of Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia on the march (colorized)

It is has been long believed that this photograph was taken in Frederick, MD on September 6, 1862 (157 years ago today) as Lee's forces are beginning their first invasion of the North. Though more recent scholarship dates this to Jubal Early's invasion of Maryland in the summer of 1864. Either way...this is a rare photo of a Civil War army on the move in the midst of a campaign.

Great honorable men who fought for their homeland against the tyrannical aggression of the North

Can we really imagine what it was like to be alive then? Can we picture ourselves choosing such an arduous path, enduring privation and likely death over a matter of pride and loyalty?
Them baws walking away from home were leaving behind a young wife, kids, no slaves, and their life’s work.
If we still dressed decently enough to have hats to take off to them, they would have earned the gesture.

The Confederates were not really known for their marching abilities on the parade ground. However, this photograph was likely taken with the column stopped and the men standing around waiting to go forward again. The way photography worked back then, these men would have been blurred out had they been moving. Plus, you have a few Confederates in the foreground turned around and looking at the camera.

Poor land tennants and sharecroppers led to slaughter by an aristocracy.

Remember that time you told LSU fans to “do what you do best and go drown in a hurricane, corndog”?
Just a friendly reminder
Cool pic, though

I do not. Though I must admit I was probably either angry, drunk or both and have been changing my ways. I was not a good person from 2013-2018 IMHO.
So I apologize for that remark.

I don’t blame General Lee for going against the north like he did.
The land that is the national cemetery was the Lee families. The government would let that family pay taxes so they could seize the land.
That would have greatly pissed me off too.
And quite a few of the officers he faced was in military school with him.

Losers of a traitorous nation.

It's sort of colorized. Their uniforms at the time are butternut. A light brown dye. They're marching through Frederick, MD in that picture. This was the beginning of the Antietam campaign.

So they colorized a photo in which everyone is wearing grey. Cool cool cool.
