I've had bad luck in ATL the last couple times I've been through there. The airport is great, its the sitting on the tarmac in a conga line that can suck some times.

I've flown about 45,000 miles this year so far and I've avoided LAX.
MSP is my favorite of that group. iPads at every seat in the international terminal. For some reason, my Thursday afternoon return flights to PIT or MEM went through that section of the airport every week when I was working in Minneapolis earlier this summer. I'd order a drink at my booth/table at the gate and they bring it out to me while I do my expenses. Decent place for a layover.
ATL has a nice international terminal as well, but it's been since February since I went through there to go to Europe. My more recent International flights are either direct from PIT to CDG (One of only a few Atlantic crossings on a narrow body) or through DTW, which is a great airport IMO.
My complaint about DTW is the long walk through the passport control on the return trip. Short lines there, though.

I really wouldn't base my decision on layover airport because of or in spite of those airport choices.
JAL/ANA are better than US domestic carriers but if you have any budget constraints, go with the Deltas of the world.
Tokyo (and Japan in general) is wonderful. I hope you read and speak Japanese or will be with someone who does.
Otherwise.... it might be challenging, especially outside of Tokyo.

Anywhere but ATL, and I'm saying that in the blind with regard to MSP and DTW. Both are Delta Hubs (like Atlanta) but I've never been through either. I'd take Seattle and LA over ATL any day.

EDIT: thought you said DFW not DTW. Despite being one of the worst cities in America, Detroit probably has the best airport in the nation. Go with that one.

I grew up in MI, so it's an amzing one, but wasn't sure what y'all thought of the others

I fly every 28 days for the last 9 yrs and have traveled through over to 20 terminals around the world, Atlanta is the easiest one of them all to navigate and Delta is the best US airline.

atl is not bad if you have a long layover, sucks if you have only a hour. i had to run a few times because of delayed flights getting in atl. msp is not bad either. never flew the other ones.

LAX is the equivalent of airport herpes. Absolutely terrible for international transfers. JFK has the worst customs and immigration terminal in your delta options.
