When the condition is caused by trisomy 21, the chromosomal abnormality occurs as a random event during the formation of reproductive cells in a parent. The abnormality usually occurs in egg cells, but it occasionally occurs in sperm cells.

I'd say that there is something that causes it, we just haven't nailed downs yet.

Now that they can be identified in prenatal testing, a lot of DS are being aborted. There are a lot fewer being born now. It's a big issue among prolifers and disability activists.

I'm willing to say at least 9 out of every 10 people with down syndrome is white.

1) Black infants have a lower chance of surviving beyond their first year after birth for an unknown reason.

2) The median age of death for whites with DS is 50, while that of blacks is 25.

3) While blacks do have the lower rate than whites of DS, Hispanics have both beat.

4)The biggest common thread among mothers giving birth to DS children is being over the age of 40 at the time of pregnancy. White people are more likely to afford/go through with the pregnancy than blacks because they are more likely to be willing/able to raise/care for it... Going out on a limb, but I have to imagine the per capita abortion rates for blacks pregnant with Downs babies are much higher than whites.

what in the hell did White people do somewhere in the history to cause such a massive amount of people with down syndrome.

We traded lupus and sickle cell for downs syndrome

That's funny, I think eventually t he rate of Downs births will surpass that of normies and then they will become the dominant species on Earth (well, next to large ponies and basically any predator and a handful of birds). In a million or two years, caves full of Downs people will gather around the fire at night and grunt tales of the tall, freakily proportioned people who used to live in the sky and drove steal ponies.

We have nailed down what causes Down's Syndrome and it is Trisomy (3 copies of a chromosome) 21. We have not pinned down what causes Trisomy 21. We know what is associated with increasing the risk but we don't know what actually causes the egg to receive 2 copies of chromomsome 21 during egg development in the mother.

No, only 1/30 old eggs are bad. 29/30 old eggs are fine. So old eggs are associated with a higher risk, but they are not bad.

DS has always been prevalent but with the advent of such things like the Internet and Life Goes On, we're much more aware.

Think about how peaceful a world would be if everyone had downs...just another animal walking around with the other animals doing meaningless shite

This is one of the most downsy posts I've ever read.

Not necessarily. 29/30 don't produce DS children. It doesn't mean they are fine. There is a myriad of other shite that could go wrong beside DS.

Two words. Aint cheap.

And the odds of a baby with downs is still pretty low.

Knowing this true to be true, and if your prior statement of white women working and then waiting until their late thirties to procreate, why wouldn't a woman who plans to conceive later in life have her eggs frozen to use later in life? Is this too logical?

It's not exactly as easy as dropping off a couple of eggs at the ole Gamete Bank downtown.

A lot of women that wait longer spent a long time in school meaning they don't exactly have the cash for something like that. Not to mention the cost of later fertilizing and implanting those eggs once you are ready.

Most, especially males, are sterile though.

i have absolutely no knowledge of any of this, but is it possible to have an extra copy of a chromosome other than "21" and what are the results of that happening?

I laughed only because I think of some fricked up stuff in the morning when I am getting ready. I am not sure what we can do to move away from it, but I think we, as humans, can become more acceptable of it.

Both of my kids came up as a high risk and my ex had to have an amniocentesis. Took a week for the results, both were fine, but by that time it was too late to abort.

What has improved that they can now abort sooner?
