Random act of kindness

Yeah, this is "Dear Facebook" but whatever.
I was on my way to work this morning and stopped to get gas about 20 miles from my house. My gas gauge was reading about 15 miles left in the tank. I don't normally cut it this close, but I got distracted by a phone call as I left the house. I went to swipe my card at the pump and realized I forgot my wallet on the table at home.
So, I went digging in the truck for loose cash. Nothing. Then I remembered I had cleaned it out last weekend. All I had was a blank check I keep in the glove compartment. So I go inside the store and ask if they would accept a personal check. The cashier said they didn't take checks. Now I realized I'm screwed. I didn't have enough gas to get to work or enough to get back home. I feel like an idiot.
I was about to call my wife at work (30 minutes away) and get her to come bring me money, when I think the cashier saw the look on my face and asked what was wrong. I told her what happened and she, without much hesitation, reached underneath the counter and grabbed her purse. She pulled out $10 and asked if that would be enough gas to get where I was going. This woman looked to be in her 60's and probably doesn't make much more than minimum wage and here she was helping out a total stranger.
I'll stop by tomorrow morning and pay her back even though she insisted it wasn't necessary. And I'll be paying it forward down the road. With all the crap you hear about, it's good to know that there are some really nice people still wandering this Earth.

Why didn't you write her a check for $50?

Why didn't you just write her the check?

Thanks for sharing, take her the money tomorrow and some flowers and you will have a friend for life.

There are more good people than bad people, but they don't get the press coverage. Most don't seek it either.

That's nice of her, but I think most people are good people especially if they feel that the person they are offering to help is a genuine person.

Trust me, I asked her several times if I could just write the check to her and she wasn't having it. It was like she didn't want to break the "no check" policy under any circumstances, but I'm not really sure. I knew I would be bringing her cash tomorrow so wasn't going to force the issue.

You should create a Twitter story about how you got beaten down by some old woman at a gas station and your last ten dollars was stolen so you couldn't get to work.
That'll teach her for being kind.

I thought this was going to be a random act of blowjob story.

None of this happened.
Yeah, I was thinking of a good story to make up and post to the OT, and a really nice cashier giving me $10 for gas was my grand creation.

Ignore the idiotic replies here---it is a really great story and things like this really do help you remember that there are so many good people in the world. Sometimes the smallest gesture is all it takes.

There's usually more in your tank than what the gauge says. The car manufacturers set a point for your gas light to come on and then there is usually still a couple of gallons left in it.
Next time you fill up when you're on "empty" look at how much gas you put in and then look how much your tank can actually hold. If you know an estimate of your gas mileage or gallon you will know how much further you can go.
