Growing up I had a girlfriend whose family had one. I'd open a kitchen cabinet and the dang thing would scare the crud out of me. Never knew where it would show up. Very creepy. It's name was Sally. I'll never forget Sally.

There is a good reason for the saying. "Crazy as a pet coon." They will destroy your shite just for the fun of it.

My next-door neighbor had a raccoon named Rocky. Very cool little pet when it was a baby but just couldn't domesticate the thing. It would tear shite up and hurt the frick out of you once it got big so they had to get rid of it.

It takes multiple selective breeding litters over many generations to domesticate an animal.

If you just raise a racoon from birth there's always the chance that it's instincts will kick in and it will frick you up. And an adult racoon is a formidable opponent.

Also, unlike dogs and cats, they have opposable thumbs, which carries all kinds of problems.

From what I've read, they're fine as pets as babies, but as they turn into juveniles and adults they can get mean/aggressive.

It's that way with most wild animals.

The only way I'd consider keeping one as a pet is if I found it as a little baby and knew for sure that it didn't have rabies.
