Great truck for the first 120k miles or so. Avoid an extensive finance plan and pay off ASAP

This thread has been on the OT many times over the years but mostly of the time the engines are not the problem the rest is and here is what you are going to get:

Ram sucks, GM and Fords are good, Toyota is the best.

Signed The OT

It's a dodge, so yes, beware of them.

Now this is a terribly misinformed post.
Ram is light years ahead of Ford and Chevy right now. From power, to ride, to interior to electronics, Ram has them beat hands down.
I drove several fords over the last 20 ears and bought a Ram almost exactly a yea ago. Best truck I've ever owned.

I baby the thing. Its still a hunk of shite compared to the Ford and Chevrolet. The engine and the price are the only things it has going for it. Every other perceptible thing is inferior to other brands. Its cheaper for a reason.

I've owned all 3 within the past 5 years and spent extensive time in all 3. I am more qualified than you to say the Ram blows arse compared to everything else.

The 5.7L Hemi is a good motor if you don’t mind paying for gas.

Apparently one of the presidential candidates wants to get rid of the oil industry. So buyer beware.

Ive sold trucks owned multiple GM,Ford and Ram trucks. Im sorry yours is a dud but that can happen with any brand. But to claim Ford and GM are miles ahead of Ram is bs. Ford has had motor issues for years dating back to 5.4s. Their interior quality is shite too. GM cant build a truck or big SUV without having tranny or fuel system problems. Ram when under the Dodge nameplate couldnt build a tranny worth a shite. In the last decade Ram has made consistent improvements to quality. Ford and GM are starting to lag and sales numbers for Ram are growing. Your opinion is dated.

No, he either doesn't or is driving 3/4 diesel trucks.

I just pulled a 16' enclosed trailer full of water to Pensacola from Ascension. Total trailer weight around 9500 pounds. My Ram pulled it like nothing I've ever driven, and I pulled a 18'er around the country for a while. The only time there was any hint of it being back there was when I needed to pass someone on the interstate, but it was a very smooth 70-75mph all the way there.
Not a chance my old F150 would have been nearly as comfortable or good as that.

Ram V8 engines have never been a widespread problem. Transmissions, on the other hand, have been garbage for as long as my memory goes back.

Maybe so. Quality issues aside it still has many shortfalls. Lots of minor things that add up to an inferior package. The uconmect system sucks for example. If someone calls you the ringer is head splitting loud in the truck and resets itself every time you crank up. Turn it down and your call volume goes way down. Turn the call volume up and yep, ringer goes back loud AF. The voice interface is so slow and stupid that its unusable. I gave up on mine and turned it off. Sometimes the display decides it doesn't want to show what song is currently on. You have to navigate through screens to find the radio presets. Its just overall a very bad interface.

There are other obvious cost saving measures that make the truck suck. You have to go through the wheel well to get the oil filter off because they didn't relocate it from its school bus location on the side the block. The fuel water separator drain drains all over the axle. You can't adjust tire pressure without getting an alarm.

There are good things about the truck. The engine is great, if you ignore the alignment issue (which im told cannot be corrected) it rides great, it gets good fuel mileage both loaded and unloaded. The seats are comfortable. Interior space is good.

Yes. I test drove a 5th gen before buying this one. The 5th gen diesel has gone to the same fuel system ford uses (Bosch cp4 fuel pump) which totally negates the engine as being the one selling point Ram has over Ford in the HD truck.

Eta: besides the price.

The 5th gen also had a shite air conditioner. In August the cab never got cool. Come to find out they designed it in a way that the air always blows over the heater coil, even when using the AC.

Your opinion is misinformed. The 5.7L Hemi has had problems in every generation, from failing crank position rings to the latest camshaft wear issues. The EcoDiesel is plagued with problems too. Fiat hasn't done Ram any favors in the reliability department no matter how much they've prettied up the interior. The 4.7L is a solid engine but a boat anchor.

From what I’ve been told it’s the hemi’s that have the eco stuff where it will swap from 8 to 4 cylinders.

I have 4 rams on the farm. 2013 with a V6, 2016 with a V6, 2016 with a hemi v8, 2017 with a hemi.

Change oil every month in them. Every single one is knocking like hell and will need a new engine.

I drive a 2500 Laramie with the 6.4 hemi. Replaced engine and tranny at 120k miles. Just put a new radiator in it, 3 weeks later and it’s leaking antifreeze again somewhere.

frick a Ram right in the arse

I believe they moved into the 8 speed on their 1500s in 2018. They did move to a beefier zf 8 speed in their Hemi 2500s in 2019. For the HD gas’s engine line, the 8 speed is the best on the market right now.

They all have issues, but trucks these days are light years better than 20 yrs ago.

I am currently parts manager at a CDJR store, our group has Ford, Chevrolet and CDJR. I have been parts manager at the Ford store as well. I think I might have a general idea about service issues across brands. The truth? They are all pretty damn reliable. Each brand has their own “issues” that vary by platform, drivetrain and trim packages. When posts like this come up I usually see all kinds of anecdotal and n/1 studies that generally lack substance and have an abundance of nonsense. When asked, and I do get asked a lot, go drive them all. Which ever makes you smile, buy it. Develop a relationship with the dealer, and if you are one of the VERY FEW that have issues, you will get taken care of.
