Disclaimer: I work for a company with north of 3500 employees/publicly traded, not named McDonald's, Burger King or Taco Bell.

If the company announces a 3% across the board raise, why do we need to do reviews ?

Blah Blah Blah Blah here's your 3%.

Maybe because most reviews are a sham anyway. I’d have more confidence in a company who says “We really don’t know how to evaluate performance so unless you’re a colossal screw up, here’s 3%.”

Auditing or some other red tape bs.

Are you sure the reviews aren’t happening anyway? Will they withhold the raise if you don’t have one?

Manager is scheduling them this and next week, such a waste of time and pain in the arse.

Do you prefer to put the mayonnaise on the top or bottom bun blah blah blah ?

So they have a baseline for your next review.

Spoiler alert - your lack of critical thinking skills will be the cause for no raise in 2019.

Reviews are stupid, especially ones where you have to assess yourself first.

Huh? My favorite type of review. Always nice to know if you're on the same page regarding strengths and weaknesses.

If you see an issue come see me or call me and tell me there is an issue. Dont wait until these stupid review forms are filled out and peck it out from behind a keyboard. I will do likewise for you boss man.

The company has probably allocated 3% per employee across the board, however some will get more and some will get less. You do not give crap employees the same as the hard workers.

Well that is at least how it works at a normal company. The average raise will be 3%

My company normally allocates between 3-5% per employee and then it is up to the people leaders to deem who gets more or less within their group.

Yeah, of course. The self assessments are nice for the more holistic view. Also, it's always useful to see if someone is going to go to one extreme or the other. On the 1-5 type reviews, don't just put 3s down the board. Give yourself a 1 or a 5 if it's appropriate.

Just because your company elects to give EVERYONE a raise, doesn't mean your supervisor doesn't have issues with you or how you are performing.

People are honest and reflective for theirs? I make wiping my arse sound like the accomplishment of the year. I know my strengths/weaknesses and they align with my feedback, but I'm not going to be complicit in the reduction of my own compensation increases. They encourage us to "sell" ourselves anyway. The whole process is total BS.

yes, these types of companies typically don't know what they're doing and grunt underlings are better suited to run the organization than the team of executives that grew the company to that size and came up with these policies
