Yeah pretty much reviews are for the upper level assholes to check a box. In all my years getting and giving reviews, nothing ever really came out of either that hit the bottom line. Most of the time it was a "pool of money that we can distribute" and usually was a flat percentage across the board.

Why can't people handle criticism in the work place?

Bunch of pussies.

Break em down, to build em up.

I love giving employee reviews. Especially since most times I don't give a raise either. It goes something like this..

Employee : Mas dinero?

Me: Nope, but I'd like to comment on your work performance, first highlighting the positives and then on areas where I feel you can improve.

Employee : Stares blankly at me as if i just shite on his mothers chest.

Companies that have great management structure and great managers have already done away with performance reviews.

Mine has. We focus on career paths and progression rather than performance....everybody knows if your performance sucks and if it does your arse is gone..ain't nothin I can do for ya.

It really sucks having to do reviews on your employees when you are not getting raises that year.

We've always had annual performance reviews. We had quarterly reviews for about two years, but that seems to have fallen by the wayside.

This was the first year though that we had to fill out a formal document (9 total pages of content; not requiring the need for the employee to fill out all 9 pages) and rate our own performance.

When I went in for my review, my boss explained that he really didn't like the thing either but that it had to do with an audit. Piked my curiosity what employee reviews have to do with audits. Can someone in the know explain?

The rest of the review didn't adhere to the document whatsoever. I think he did get a kick out of the people who gave themselves all perfect scores though.

To see if corporate policies are being followed at specific sites.

Maybe because most reviews are a sham anyway.

This.
I work for a mega corp. HR doesn't even look at them. When it's time to promote someone, all you need is VP approval. And he ain't looking at a bunch of reviews to determine whether or not the promo happens.

I have a good manager.

We gloss over the “review” portion in about 5 minutes and then get to the career progression portion. What do I want to go and how do I get there?

Promotions are how you get real raises, not annual merit increases. If you get a large merit raise, all it means is that company recognizes that you were being paid under market and wants to keep you before you realize it and bolt.

I'm getting bigger raises than you because my company gives raises based on merit, not every shitty employee getting the same as the best employees.

Enjoy your shitty company.
