Well if you have kids, Dr's appointments, dentist appointments just don't feel good that day. So, in your job, what do you do? And what type of discipline do you receive? Are you on call 24/7 with no scheduled off days.

we have 20 days in advance to put PL days in and a cap of 2 to 3 people per day, but CSX can take them out within 48 hrs

had 4 weeks vacation and 11 personal leave days, the vacation weeks you have to schedule in November for the upcoming year and it is based on seniority. The way I have heard the benefits described in reports and articles is very different from what you just laid out here.
I get it, it sucks not being able to take off for an emergency. I’m very fortunate I’m able to do so.
The on call thing, isn’t that more of a factor if understaffing?
What kind of pay raise is being negotiated along with these increases in benefits?

Yeah that sucks. I so tired of trying to explain to some of these idiots that it's not like a regular job, hell it's not even like a plant job. Management just makes it way more difficult than it should be.

I put in PL days at the first of the year for May. In the comments, I wrote "My only child's high school graduation". Three times I put in for them & they were declined all three times.
It's hard to describe to anyone how shitty these railroads are & how they thrive on making their employees as miserable as possible.

This is pretty common in every field.

Non rails will never understand it so gave up trying to explain.
For some reason they don't understand that when the lineup says you stand to go to work at 1800 and your phone rings at 0400 for 0600 on duty it kind of sucks. Especially when you had a dentist appointment at 10am or you had a service appointment for your truck, etc, etc. Let alone the fact you cannot get properly rested for that shite.
Double ended ID pools were hell trying to figure out when you were going to work. Those were bad as you'd go to bed and be rested for your 0600 call and the train would fall down a bit so a St. Paul crew west rested for it and would get it instead. Then you sit home for 12+ hours while all the other St. Paul crews go out on rest and you finally get called when you should be going to sleep. And you only have a 231 mile run, single track mostly, ahead of you. Which means you'll likely be on that train for 12 hours if you don't die at Hastings as the yard can't handle you or the Glenwood sub is jacked up so they don't want your train.

Have you worked for the railroad?
No.
I have. I also worked other jobs before and after.
There is no comparison.
Did your boss hire you only to spend the next 10+ years trying to fire you?
Does he hide in the weeds making sure you do a proper brake test on your locomotives before moving them off the dock?
Does he watch your conductor through binoculars to make sure he throws the far switch first so he has to walk back to get the one in front of your locomotive?

What the hell does that have to do with what I said? I'm talking about management in general. They always make it harder than what it has to be.
Railroad doesn't have the only bad management on the planet.

So, a regular job.
Most people don’t consider a railroad engineer or conductor a regular job

That’s why I left the railroad. I’ve seen the railroad ruin so many people’s lives in my eight years on the rails. I love railroading, but the toxic work environment was making me a miserable man. I was sick of being on call 24/7. Sick of seeing motivated new hires furloughed, called back, and furloughed again.
Now I work for the federal government and I love going to work everyday. I work only 4 days a week and my pay is tad bit less, but it’s worth it for my happiness.

A deal has been reached that will avert the strike.

Pretty much on call 24/7, but not exactly forced. Can receive discipline if not responding becomes an issue.

Use PTO, hire a babysitter, use family if I am lucky enough to plan that far ahead.
If I don't 'feel good' I just go to work. Can't think of the last time I was so sick I couldn't make it to work.
I don't think anyone answered how many of those 30pts yall lose for calling in sick one time.

Good. Corporations conceding to better employment conditions and the rails continuing to operate is best for everyone.

@JStein_WaPo and I have confirmed that railroads have agreed to give workers the ability to take days off for medical care without being subject to discipline.
This was THE key demand that railroad workers wanted to strike over, and they got it.
quote:
MORE DETAILS:
Workers will receive voluntary assigned days off AND a single additional paid day off. (They previously did not receive sick days.)
+ The agreement provides members with ability to take unpaid days for medical care without being subject to attendance policies.
Then a user named whodatnation, who says he's an engineer on his profile, posted this
quote:
This was NOT the key demand we are seeking. We want to ensure there is an engineer and conductor on every train. No one man crews

Thanks for posting. The posters on here and the articles I’ve read over the past few days painted the issues mainly concerned with the time off.

hope the agreement is stuck to....we lost the ability to ship chlorine starting tuesday so hopefully this opens things back up.
