It’s not really them. It’s the middlemen.

Especially with seafood, buying directly off the dock or at a stall is very price friendly.

The shrimpers are selling for $3/lb to the wholesalers, and they retail for $10.

The problem there is a shrimp mafia....and if the docks find out you're selling off your boat they will blackball you and never buy from you again.....the boats are almost forced to sell to the docks, bc when the demand gets low and prices get too high or low, those boats don't want to be stuck with a week old shrimp..

It's in their best interest to sell to the docks, refuel, re ice and get back out there and catch more shrimp.

Yes

I know a few guys who will hold some back “for personal consumption” then call guys when they get home offering to sell some. But it’s very much “I have 20 lbs but you have to come by in 30 min” thing.

Exactly, they will start calling family and friends on their way in and meet somewhere to charge "off the boat" prices before the boat heads to the dock to offload their haul.

No it isn't. Compared to everything else in the economy its still really cheap

This is a ridiculous statement. How are you going to make it cheaper when we have the lowest herd number in 60 years because ranchers have been going out of business and shrimpers are constantly going out of business

Its cheaper to bring it in from around the world because they have a combination of no regulations, are subsidizing the industry like crazy, and use 1 step above slave labor

Let me guess - this requires a stop work order on a construction project.

I am certain this happens in Georgia and South Carolina but in SC especially the shrimpers seem to be of a mind to tell the wholesalers to kiss their sunburnt asses....there is and has been for years a MASSIVE push in GA and SC, but especially SC. to buy directly off the boat to the point that they advertise on TV and radio constantly.....for the most part this is unbrined shrimp....because the market is there for it as soon as it hits the dock...and it is sooooooo much tastier than brined shrimp even if it was brined the same day it was caught. They are pretty aggressive about it, especially in SC....I have no idea if they are making any more money doing it but I know they push it pretty aggressively.

There is one shrimp dock on the way to Hunting island with a restaurant across the road that is open from 11 am to 2 PM Wednesday - Saturday and they literally haul unbrined shrimp about 1000 yards across the street from the boat to the kitchen....and it is by far the best restaurant shrimp I ever ate. If they ain't caught enough you're shite out of luck...the place is always packed. I think they have other stuff on a menu, not certain, because all I ever saw anyone eating was shrimp that were probably still kicking when they started across the street....

I very much dislike Nungesser for his handling of many of the coastal projects here in LA.

?

He doesn't have any authority over any coastal projects. He can complain or praise, but the Lt Gov's office has no authority in that realm.

I’d bet The Canal Street Madam provided assurances but her establishment was shut down in 2003. So who knows

He can also peddle influence like no other as he’s the #2 elected official in the state and his influence effectively killed the latest effort to rebuild our marshes and swamp land.

What in the world are you talking about? What exactly is a “brined shrimp”?

I’ve been buying fresh shrimp from the boats/docks for yrs and never heard of this.

I do have to admit to buying South American Argentinean shrimp from time to time. They work very nice in a pasta.

GOA shrimps for frying, gumbos and stews, though.

Louisiana shrimpers aren’t getting anywhere near $3/lb from wholesalers

Yeap, $1-1.50lb for bigger sizes if lucky, maybe less

I can’t remember the last time I paid anymore than $3.50 for 16/20’s, going back at least 15yrs.

If it is intended to be shipped far, even more than a few miles (in my understanding), it is placed in a mixture of salt and ice water immediately after its caught...on the boat, before the boat head to the hill. Unbrined is put on ice. Brining supposedly makes it slightly firmer and more moist when shipped any distance or frozen or not cooked within a few hours of harvest. Un brined is, in my opinion and most people who know agree, better tasting IF it is cooked within hours of harvest. If you have ever ate any shrimp you've netted yourself and simply tossed it on ice to get back to the hill it is, like all seafood, better the fresher it is. Again, that's my opinion...the SC and the Georgia Shrimping Associations, up until a few years ago, touted the practice of buying un brined shrimp if possible....they do not seem to be as aggressive about it as they once were but it used to be common to see pamphlets and such at shrimp docks. There is a noticeable difference....but it has to be FRESH as in a couple of hours from harvest otherwise un brined shrimp can get soft and dried out...but un brined is far better when fresh, again in my opinion.
