FORT WORTH, TX—Despite having been on the job for nine months, RadioShack CEO Julian Day said Monday that he still has "no idea" how the home electronics store manages to stay open.
"There must be some sort of business model that enables this company to make money, but I'll be damned if I know what it is," Day said. "You wouldn't think that people still buy enough strobe lights and extension cords to support an entire nationwide chain, but I guess they must, or I wouldn't have this desk to sit behind all day."

I think there is a market for a store like Radio Shack, but they need to update themselves. A store that specializes in electronic gadgets, computer and phone accessories, electronic games and toys, cameras, computers, rare batteries, parts for repairs, hi-tech gear, etc. They need to expand their inventory and scope to stay relevent, with improved customer service and stepped up internet sales support.

They were a really fun store back in the day.
I bought Trout Mask Replica at a Radio Shack.

They employee did not inspire confidence Though I did have one of their employees recommend a tv antenna that works great. Of course I tried four different ones atbest buy first that all sucked.
I guess the market for making a radio out of a potato isn't what it used to be.

I swear to you that the last time I went to a Radio Shack to buy anything was in 2005 after Katrina - needed an antenna for my tv so I could watch the LSU and Saints games at the beginning of September.

Growing up it was one of those stores in the mall I would kill time in when my mom and sister were shopping. I don't think I've ever bought anything there.

Another store like them that I can't believe exists is Batteries Plus. A full chain store for batteries.

SB Nation did A EULOGY FOR RADIO SHACK written by one of their correspondents that worked there for a while.
A lot of his experience reminds me a lot of working at Blockbuster in 2005-2007 during college - shitty management that had no idea how to sell, upper management out of touch with what actually goes on at the store level, and getting completely left in the dust by Netflix and Redbox.

Been in da shack a few times the last year or so. I bought a couple random things with their warranty I knew I would break. I'm on my fourth round of returns. Started with a radar detector--returned for a bluetooth speaker---returned for some iphone cords---returned for new iphone cords.

My favorite RS experience was going there and buying a bunch of switches and relays, batteries, etc to make a "Shock Box" for phsyics class.
Was awesome.

I dabble in electronics as a hobby and if I need a part that I don't have laying around and don't want t wait on the mail I make a run to Radio Shack. Happens fairly often. I'll be sad to see them go.

Radio shack screwed up when they stopped hiring knowledgable sales persons. Radio shack sales people used to be able to tell you how to build things, and could diagnose problems and sell you the appropriate parts to fix said problem. Then those folks all were let go/ retired when they reimaged the chain back in the early 00s. I've been frustrated every time I've gone in one in the last 10 years

I would only go in Radio Shack to look at RC cars.

Batteries that are hard to find anywhere else. And they also service commercial accounts. They do alright.

When the iphone 6 came out you couldn't find them at Best Buy or the AT&T store around here. Radio Shack had like a dozen and my wife and I got ours the day it came out - no deposit, no nothing. And literally no one was in the store when we got them.
