I don't understand these "moral dilemmas" self driving cars will have. Don't human drivers face the same moral driving dilemmas?

They do, but one of the big problems is determining fault when an accident happens.

the self driving cars won't pull the aggressive moves that cause human accidents...

Tf. Why is the system detecting race to begin with. Shouldnt it be able to detect a human being without identifying the race of the person.

This doesn't sound like a racial problem, but rather a big fricking system defect.

They won't, but accidents will still happen. Like this thread is about, maybe the systems won't detect certain people or objects. Or maybe the software will fail. Or maybe a lamp post falls on the road and the car has to decide whether to crash itself and potentially kill its own occupants, or swerve into some people on the sidewalk.

There will be times when the algorithm will have to make decisions. By the time it is available to the public, the decision making will be infinitely quicker than any human brain.

You serious?

They don't detect race. The problem is that some of the systems used don't detect darker colors as well.

That is my point. If the system needs to detect color in order to detect a human being, the system is defected. Back to the drawing board they go.

I’m not a self driving car but I have this same issue at night. Dark skinned ppl shouldn’t wear dark clothing at night when walking down the street.

I promise you the companies developing self-driving tech are at the drawing board all day, every day. It's just that this is a very hard problem.

No single tech will work well in every situation. Visual cameras don't work well in the dark/snow/rain. LIDAR doesn't detect darker colors well. RADAR doesn't have very high resolution. Ultrasonic sensors don't have much range. Thermal cameras have to deal with environmental issues.

It takes a combination of techs just to be sufficient, but we're probably a long way off from perfection, which probably isn't even attainable. And each tech has its own costs and technical challenges, which obviously influence the direction of things.

The problem isn't that it's detecting colors. It's that it's not detecting darker colors as easily. You make it sound like it's prioritizing one over the other.

I understand that. I wasnt flaming the company at all. Just consider me a pessimist when it comes to alot of this so called new technology stuff. I don't trust it. Especially self driving cars.

If you're like most people, including myself, you're not quite ready to trust your own car to drive itself, but you wish most of the idiots on the road with you had self driving cars.
