I doubt it. Most of them could leave work and forget about it. Now, I’m always available, always getting emails, calls, texts. Go on vacation, they call. Night time, they call. To have a high paying white collar job today means to never turn it off.

We aren’t all a little pussy like you. Man up. I can still work those hours (I just finished four months of turnarounds) and I’m 50. Oh and that came out to an extra $40K for me this year. I’ll take their money and not complain.

Here’s another one. He seems to think manhood comes from working a lot. Such an odd mentality.

That can be said of pretty much any generation where progress has been made.

The world is constantly changing, and we're heading for a world where human labor will have much less value and we will need to define our success in life in terms other than economic productivity.

By the end of the decade we will see economic upheaval like we haven't seen before. This won't be another industrial revolution where machines help us do more. This will be more like cars replacing horses, AI/automation is the car and we're the horse.

We're all going to need to be figure out what life looks like in a post work world sooner than later.

Also, is all that extra work a path to advancement? To what? Lead operator? Or did he just make more money (likely)?

I also work at a plant. 13 and 1 was the norm, but the plant I work for now doesn’t do fatigue days. We also don’t do long turnarounds though.

The money is awesome during outages, but I’m staying at this plant because of the lack of OT

Baws pile up money hand over fist during turnarounds. More power to them if they choose to use their abilities to power through some work and bank roll. It’s not for advancement though, it’s for OT and bank rolling

Edit: a really good turnaround can buy a baw a boat in cash

Im an older millennial, and i get it. Work/life balance. Makes no sense to go above and beyond and put in more hours than is needed.

Bet your teammates and colleagues love you... I am also older millenial and will put in extra hours to get shite done.

Oh yeah that's what I was saying. Stacking cash with OT and doing more than your job for possible future advancement are VERY different things.

I think people just doing the minimum to get by is nothing new.I saw it in jobs during high school,in the Navy and in my hospital days.

I wasn’t like that,I always stayed busy at work for no other reason than it made the time go by faster.

I did that once about 15 years ago. I'd leave the door to my office about 1/3 open and read true crime novels all day. Bought an immersion heater so I could cook soup. $92,352 / year base salary.

And this is some brag? How much time did you miss with friends and loved ones? Work yourself into an early grave so that the company can earn a profit and replace you within a week of you dying. What a crap mindset.

Most operators or plant baws in general are in their position for the long haul. Most aren’t the type motivated by advancement, just by doing their craft at a high level and making fat stacks to enjoy their lives. Not my thing, but no shame in that game

Thats the plan anyway.
They did it first with the drafters.

The difference is the drafters/designers didnt have the State certifications.

The lower-levels are full of qualified candidates because very few have been given the opportunity to advance.

So doing a bare minimum at work is going to help this? Have some self pride people. You asked for a job. Do a good one. There is no excuse for laziness. None.

Having self pride and doing a good job is the minimum. You get hired to do a job, which is the minimum of that job. Anything else is above and beyond. If the company is looking for the above and beyond, then they need to put that as the minimum for that job and pay accordingly. This whole minimum thing is a dumb take. The minimum is doing the job as hired. You don’t hire someone for a job and then get upset when they don't do more than what you hired them for. I get always wanting more production out of people. So hire someone with the minimum job output being what is actually desired. If the goals for a business need everyone operating at 110%+, then it's a terrible business plan with terrible leadership.
