Since I'm tired of the Political Board right now and switching to YouTube LSU telecasts...

Lately, I've been thinking about the questions I wish I could have discussed with my father about WW2 and his participation...

He had energy on the subject let me tell you, but he really didn't talk too much about it...

One memory that really hits me is the two of us climbing to the top of the Koln (colonge) Cathedrial...he was bound and determined and virtually double-timed up to the top, leaving my mother behind...he had driven through there in April 1945 by my best reconstruction of events, he did show me the only street that was open through the city...

But the unasked questions:

You delivered a trainload of Nazis to Dachau when the Army used it as a holding area for them, other than the best looking redhead you ever saw, what was it like?

You were in Nurenburg in 1946, did you have to pull guard for any war criminals? Did you have to witness any executions?

What in your experiences turned you against organized religion?

Just wondering if any of y'all with WW2 veteran parents finally got the wisdom to ask questions of this sort, but didn't put the pieces together until they were gone...

Grandpa served in France in ww2. Never got to talk to him about it as I was too young to think much of it. He never spoke about it. But he did for the rest of his life take a crap by getting In catchers stance on top of the toilet seat.

I’d ask if he sat next to David Duke at lunch throughout high school.

Have I given you that moment where you said it was all worth it, and if not how do I do that?

Would you mind repeating all those stories you told me when I was young and too stupid to pay attention?

I meant to ask you how to fix that car
I always meant to ask you about the war
And what you saw across a bridge too far
Did it leave a scar

Or how you navigated wings of fire and steel
Up where heaven had no more secrets to conceal
And still you found the ground beneath your wheels
How did it feel

Bang the drum slowly play the pipe lowly
To dust be returning from dust we begin
Bang the drum slowly I'll speak of things holy
Above and below me world without end

I meant to ask you how when everything seemed lost
And your fate was in a game of dice they tossed
There was still that line that you would never cross
At any cost

I meant to ask you how you lived what you believed
With nothing but your heart up your sleeve
And if you ever really were deceived
By the likes of me

Bang the drum slowly play the pipe lowly
To dust be returning from dust we begin
Bang the drum slowly I'll speak of things holy
Above and below me world without end

Gone now is the day and gone the sun
There is peace tonight all over Arlington
But the songs of my life will still be sung
By the light of the New Moon

I meant to ask you how to plow that field
I meant to bring you water from the well
And be the one beside you when you fell
Could you tell

Bang the drum slowly play the pipe lowly
To dust be returning from dust we begin
Bang the drum slowly I'll speak of things holy
Above and below me world without end

Is there a payment plan out there that you haven't fallen in love with?

...but I'll say one thing. His terrible decisions caused me to make sure I didn't turn out the same way.

Mine told me things on his deathbed that I didn't want to know about his experiences in WWII (Pacific).

I was the only family member he chose to share that with, probably the only other person.

I don't recommend it.
