I'm up for a promotion with the FAA. However, it require me to relocate to Miami (near the airport) from Houston. For any of you who may reside in the Miami area I have a few questions.

1.) Is Miami a good place to live?
2.) What area would you recommend living?
3.) How bad is the traffic in the are between 6-7am and 3-4pm?
4.) What's the average monthly cost of day to day living? (i.e. food, gas, housing)

worked out of MIA for a number of years but lived up near Jupiter, Miami has some decent areas though, are kids/schools a factor? traffic can be a bitch depending on where you're traveling at those times

I lived in South Florida for a few years and actually enjoyed it. There are things to do any night regardless of what you are into. I got into triathlons and you could easily do 2-3 a month without traveling more than an hour or two. Used to do the day cruise over to the bahamas (you don't have to go and come back the same day so for $99 (at that time) I could go over on Friday and come back on Sunday. I would head down to Hawk's Cay some weekends in the keys. The gulf stream is only about a mile to a mile and a half off shore so you have easy access to fishing and scuba diving. We used to go right off the beach after strong storms diving for lobster.

May sound weird, but I really missed the trees. Lots of scrub, palm, etc, but it wasn't the same.

I did spend quiet a bit of money down there, but that was because there was so much to do. Traffic is bad, but it's not as bad as it is on the west coast of Florida. I thought food was fairly reasonable. Lots of farms and a great growing season so it was pretty reasonable.

1.) Is Miami a good place to live?

Depends on what area you live in.

2.) What area would you recommend living?

As far North and West as possible

3.) How bad is the traffic in the are between 6-7am and 3-4pm?

In the words of Charles Barley, turrible. There is always traffic in Miami. Take the turnpike.

4.) What's the average monthly cost of day to day living? (i.e. food, gas, housing)

If I remember correctly, gas was about .50 higher a gallon than the New Orleans area. Housing will be higher than what you are paying in Houston.

Kids/schools are not a factor.

Just watch out for the falling iguanas when it is cold.

NWS actually put that in a weather statement in the last day or so when it got cold in the last few days.

Learn to like black bean soup, learn how to play dominos, and learn how to speak Cuban.

That's all I got.
