Very OT but my grandfather passed away recently and in his Will he gifted a '71 F100 to me being the sole grandson. Just wanting to figure out a ballpark estimate on restoring it. He refurbished it in 08 but my uncle has let it sit out uncovered since then

71 F100 is a nice truck, post pictures and give more details if you want a serious answer.

if everything is structurally sound (refurb in 08), you might need to paint it.

a few grand might do the trick

This. I have a 71 bronco and it's based on your definition of restored. I have about 35 in mine and I think its great...but to another guy he might want to put another 50 into it for it to be restored by his definition.

If it's rust-free, I'd just get it running and focus on keeping it rust-free. You don't need to disassemble the whole thing and sandblast the crap out of everything.

If the paint doesn't shine to your liking, you can polish it, or have it polished, with a fine abrasive. Or go the Earl Scheib / Maaco route, but do as much damn prep work as you can beforehand (they won't) and cover everything you don't want painted (they'll paint over everything but the windshield). You don't want to rely on those knuckleheads to fix any body damage or rust, and you certainly do not want them to try to do a color change.

The mechanical parts of the job should be pretty cheap and easy.

Now, if it's a rust-bucket, or if you're wanting some concours-worthy finish, that's a different story.

How good are you with one of these?

The better you are with a wrench and the more time you have the less it will cost.

All that said the number is not definable without knowing the condition of the truck now and the condition you want it in when you finish.

You could probably take it to a custom shop and have a stunning truck for 25-30k.

Find a good forum for older F series trucks. Ask the board what trouble spots to look for - typically each older car/truck has some rust prone area that gets expensive or is often overlooked. They'll also give you some tips or pointers on other areas. Take pics of where they say to look and post those to the board. You'll generally get a pretty good assessment in short order with no cost to you.

Its by no means a rust bucket but I do think it would need 5-10 to get it running.

This is great online Ford Forum site that has a lot of great resources for restoring a ford truck in this era. I am currently restoring my dads 68 Ford and yes it can get expensive and time consuming but it will be worth it to me.

Post pics of the interior and exterior. Without them, the estimate will be anywhere from not a helluva lot to cheaper to buy a house.

Factor in a paint job will be around $7k for driver quality. Price goes up if it needs bodywork and sky's the limit if you want a show quality paint job.
