Question on Teacher Walkouts
Posted on 4/26/18 at 7:27 am
Posted on 4/26/18 at 7:27 am
Are we going to raise qualifications and licensure for teachers since they want to be paid like doctors, lawyers, nurses, and engineers?

Link?
Otherwise I’m pretty sure you’re talking nonsense and starting a good ole TD teacher bashing thread.

Could always make it merit based.
You teach students better, you get bonuses.

Teachers need to grow a pair and fight. They’re always used as political capital to get taxes passed, then previous money appropriated for them is moved to entitlements or construction projects and they’re left worse off or the same as before.
The policians know they care about the students and aren’t going to walk (and are not qualified for any other job as leverage on their side) so until they do actually strike or bargain a better situation, they will always be stuck in this position.
Personally I wish they were paid significantly better and the higher wage attracted better teachers. Education is really the best way to break the cycle.

No one forces them to not work during the summer. I have a few friends that have side businesses that make pretty good money after school/summer.

One of those is not like the others.

First...when talking about paying them at the level of, you listed doctors, lawyers, engineers...and nurses
Second...I think paying that at the same level as nurses would be perfectly acceptable.

I agree with OP. It should much more difficult for someone to become a teacher. Not doctor-level schooling, but a teacher should have a major in the field they are teaching. They should also be required to be a specialist in teaching something (British Lit or Algebra or Biology, etc). Pedagogy courses should be limited to two or three over the course of a four year degree program.
I also agree with merit-based pay raises, the removal of tenure, and the freedom for teachers to negotiate salary and resources for their classroom.
However, until the entire system gets an overhaul, none of these are feasible. Merit pay always gets attached to standardized test scores and student performance. Too many people care more about extracurriculars and non-education-based standards, which means removing tenure puts good teachers at risk of losing their jobs because they won't coach a sport or put in extra hours after work.

those people don't necessarily make good teachers
i think the best teachers aren't necessarily the ones with the most subject matter knowledge, but the ones that are best at communicating with younger people to get the message across

Then fire them for being bad teachers and hire the knowledgeable ones who put forth the effort to be a good teacher. I spent too many years working with people who regurgitated textbook information in the form of notes and gave pathetically worthless assignments and assessments.

Stringed what happened to the kid with the email with awful grammar asking for help the day the assignment was due??

do you honestly believe someone teaching 3rd grade math needs to be have a college math degree?

I'll just copy and paste what typed at the end of the thread:
quote:
I did exactly what I said I'd do.
I replied with a quick overview of the prompt and mentioned that we did numerous activities in class to help with the completion of the essay. I then said that it was really close to the deadline to be asking for an explanation of the assignment and that I would stay after class that night to answer any specific questions about the prompt. I didn't discuss his informal and unprofessional email and I did use formal language in my response.
To my surprise, he showed up to class. When class was over, I asked him if he wanted to talk about the assignment. He said, "I think I got it now!" kinda jovially.
He turned in his essay two hours late (2am vs. the midnight deadline). I just gave it a quick skim and it looks like shite.
So I assume the outcome will be a rather lackluster grade.
It was an F paper.

Sounds like the owner operators of daycare programs or after school programs. More lucrative.
Bottom line is many states make teaching as attractive as nursing in Louisiana seems to be. No one spends 4 years in school for the dream of $32,000 a year.

Depends on the subject matter.
There is a difference between teaching AP Chemistry to high school seniors and teaching reading and writing to 2nd graders.

Well you did your job. I followed the thread for a while and missed the update.

Yeah I'm fine with paying them similar to a nurse
Both require a degree and test to become certified
Isn't pay pretty close already?

Chic-Fil-A is the perfect analogy. If you pay a better wage, you typically will have more qualified/competent applicants.
