I loved living in Louisiana, but when your job takes you away, it is what it is! Now, my children are both married and one has a grandchild, so I will most likely will never move back. On the bright side, I have a lot of relatives in south Louisiana, so I still visit quite often.

A small part of me wishes I would have tried NYC right out of college

It probably wouldn't have ended great... but why not?

Don’t you live in like Alexandria?

That’s not really Louisiana it’s like a slice of Detroit

Life is what you make it. Every time I've made a choice of significance or accomplished something, I realize that being a cpa or moving to Colorado or being a home owner doesn't really change who I am on a base level. If you're depressed and it has multiple components, just moving will not change things.

This. I’m a miserable, insane, depressed person. I’m not suddenly going to become happy, healthy, successful, and socially adept by changing my zip code. If anything, South Louisiana may be the only place where I can survive thanks to my support system which I have built up over the course of my life.

Moved in 1984. Have lived in:
Iowa
Kentucky
Georgia
Florida
Texas

In every case life immensely improved
Most homesickness and culture shock happened in the 3 years of Iowa - 84-87. But once I figured out that the New Orleans I missed was gone, and lodged in my youthful memories, all good.Plus we can visit when we want, but don’t have to stay.

At first, it felt like things got worse. Figuring things out in a new city has its challenges. It was hard finding a place we liked, and could afford.

10 years in, my career has really taken off in a way that would never have been possible in NOLA. More importantly, I'm as a happy a I've ever been in my life.

I do sometimes wish I'd waited another 5 years to have more time with my grandmothers and their generation.

Everyone likes to hate on Louisiana. If you aren’t happy, then leave. But because you aren’t happy, doesn’t mean I cannot be happy. I’m living great in Louisiana.

All of this is fantastic for me: work, people, food, festivals, culture, hunting, fishing, sports, LSU, Saints, boating, fun, etc.

If you cannot be happy in Louisiana, then you should go. But stop trying to act like the rest of us are miserable just because you failed to be happy.

Nearly everything got better. I do wish my kids had gotten some of the experiences I had growing up in small town Louisiana, but they’ve also experienced a lot more than I did growing up.

I enjoy visiting Louisiana. But very happy in Texas.

For those of you who have been able to leave Louisiana and move elsewhere, did you find that your life drastically improved when you settled in a new place? Did most things in life get better or stay the same?

The answer is both yes and no.

I live in a place that Louisiana will never be in terms of education and healthcare. Those are important things.

The opportunities to see new places are much higher, the job market is much better, it’s infinitely safer, the weather is better, I can be near mountains or beaches within a short drive, etc.

But you have to be ok knowing you need to make new friends, because the reality is aside from those closest to you, any of your casual friends will end up falling by the wayside. And that’s not their fault or yours, it’s just what happens.

And the cost of living is exponentially higher. So you also have to be ok not having a nice house on a golf course and settle for a condo instead.

I miss home from time to time, then I go home to visit. I do not regret moving away for a second.

We are moving out of #50 in a couple weeks. Going all the way to #1 (Utah). So ready to be done with all the bs that comes with living in Louisiana. Getting screwed one last time by having to put a new roof on our house because the buyers can't get insurance with a *gasp* 10-15 year old roof.

We will miss friends and family, like everyone else, but the upside makes it so worth it. Great public schools, non-corrupt government, no crime (murders, anyway), 4 seasons, and tons of outdoor activities. Counting down the days...

I'll be sure to bump this thread at the end of the year to let everyone know how happy I am

Yeah, Im much happier but I live somewhere with way more outdoors options and that was part of the sell.

I do find CO does just about everything better than LA, in terms of government functioning.

Was in Nashville last week for a concert at the Ryman. Very clean downtown with no threat of being mugged walking around late at night unlike say New Orleans.

Downside to moving to a large city is the commute. Sounds miserable spending two hours in a fricking car to go back/from to work. I’ll take my 15 minute commute and go visit the big cities for fun

Yeah, but this thread isn’t about you. OP asked for opinions from those who moved away. Not everything is about you.

The worst traffic I experience is when I go back to BR to visit family. By far worse than anything I face in DFW.

I moved away after LSU and about a year as a programmer in BTR.

Wasn't necessarily looking to get out, but wasn't heavily invested in La with a big family. I'd only lived there since my last year of high school and through extended years in college as I had to work my way through with no student loans.

But my Dad was a military guy and moved us around so I was used to it. Hell, he and my Mom had already moved from Alec to Fort Walton Beach by the time I got out of LSU.

Got multiple offers out of state but ended up in Virginia, which I found has a pretty good standard of living, lots of jobs, close to mountains, bay/beaches, and big cities if you want those. And the weather doesn't stay hot as ballz for months at a time.

Nothing against Louisiana. As I've stated in other threads like this: if it could have worked out and I ended up w my grandfather's cattle ranch in Natchitoches parish I would be looking at these threads from an La perspective. And I'm sure I would be as content there as I am on my country place in Virginia.
