If you were moving to one of these areas just to start over, which is the best, Alpharetta, Athens, Marietta, or Norcross? Factors include cost of living, jobs, schools, and crime rate.

Among Metro

1a - Best parts of Marietta address (East Cobb, Walton HS)
1b - Alpharetta (nice, terrible commute)

Decent gap

2 - rest of Marietta

Significant gap

3 - Norcross

Athens is a different thing altogether. Lots of crime in Athens, but it's fun.

They all have their pros and cons but all of them are good places to live.

For me:
1. Athens
2.Alpharetta
3.Marietta
4. Norcross

Other good places North and East:
Woodstock
Cartersville
Canton
Gainesville
Rome
Johns Creek
Sandy Springs
Snellville
Acworth
Duluth
Buford
Roswell
Lawrenceville

Only places I would live on south side:
Newnan
Peachtree City
McDonough

West side:
Bremen
Villa Rica

These are all outside the perimeter locales. Plenty of great places ITP if you have the money.

I'd probably lean toward Marietta. Close to Atlanta, but also an easy shot to the N.GA mountains. If I was moving, I'd highly consider the Woodstock area for a slightly less urban lifestyle than the others.

I don't know about the other areas, but I spent a short time in Alpharetta on a couple occasions. It's a beautiful area - everything looks brand new there. If there were something comparable around where I live, I'd move there in a heartbeat.

Not from GA but have spent a lot of time in Roswell. I don't know if i could handle the commute on a day to day basis. I know it is dependent on where you are working and when you are commuting but that traffic is something else.

From the OP's list, Athens is very different than the other three. Where would you try to work?

Alpharetta, Woodstock, Canton

Lived in Woodstock/Canton for 3 years and miss it. Weekend drives in the Fall through the mountains were awesome.

I grew up in Alpharetta, and now live in Athens (not a UGA student).

You're gonna have to help me out here though, because three of those are major metropolitan suburbs, while the other is smaller college town. So two completely different styles.

So the big question is what appeals to you more, living in a big city like Atlanta, or a smaller town like Athens?

I've been living in Athens as professional for the past five years. Here's my breakdown on your factors:

Cost of living - Will be much better than Atlanta, especially when it comes to nightlife, food, drinks, etc. And I'm not talking about college bars. The older and more upscale establishments are also much more reasonable than your typical metro Atlanta watering hole. You can find whatever housing fits your budget. Property taxes in Clarke County (where Athens is located) suck, so a lot of families live in Oconee County or one of the other counties adjacent to Clarke.

Jobs - Athens is growing a lot right now. I can't speak to the types of industries that are hiring, but seems like there would be some solid opportunities. Obviously the sheer number of jobs and opportunities won't be the same as in Atlanta.

Schools - Depends on where you live and whether you go public or private. A lot of the more affluent families whose kids go to public school live in Oconee County, directly south of Athens. I hear good things about the Oconee Co. school system. The public schools in Athens-Clarke county are not so great. However, there are multiple good private/religious schools within Clarke County.

Crime rate - Again, depends on where you live in Athens. If you are living in the sketchier areas that appeal more to the poor college student, it's a little riskier. However, most areas of Athens and the surrounding counties are perfectly fine.

Alpharetta and Marietta - rich upper class ATL suburbs

Norcross - okay suburb with lots of Mexicans

Athens - college town with lots of ghetto

I live in Fayette County on the south side. It's close to Atl for entertainment and business but still has country style living in the southern part of the county. The schools are above average for Atl also. It is the Fayetteville/Peachtree City area. Good luck.
