That's what I love about the OT, it's the only place I can come and express my views about the trendy naming of kids. You should see the names with the stupid little dance studio and soccer teams in the back of the Suburbans in Lafayette.

I completely agree. People naming kids with "cute" and alternative spellings. Exchanging every vowel for a "Y" and adding random hyphens and accent marks wherever they see fit...disregarding any and all rules of phonetics. These kids are going to be submitting resumes in 20 years with absurd and jacked up names at the top. Guys with "cute" and otherwise sissy, alternatively spelled names are going to be grandpas someday.

It's nice if the initials don't spell a word. I've seen some strange monograms.

Had my parent considered things a bit, I would not have had given initials that are enough to get you suspended for using.
Even as a grown up, I could not use them in my profession as an elementary school teacher.

I've seen that happen and the person doesn't use the middle initial, usually. I have a brother whose name spells a word, but at least it's not a bad one. It just looks stupid.

i met a very attractive young lady the other day who happened to also be black who was still in school, she was not really thrilled with her name, it was Caroline, i told her she would thank her parents when she started filling out job applications.

My sister recently had twins. They also went the "older" name route. First and middle names were from both sides of Grandparents and last name obviously her husband's last name.
So they are Frederick Adams and Lillian Amelia. I absolutely love their names along w/ nicknames: Fred, Freddie and Lilly, Lils.

I can imagine it could be tough being married into a family that does this, and being expected to use their name by your MIL. Not saying your family does that -- just saw it happen before and it made me ponder it.

Some of the "popular" names right now are old names. Liam and Olivia are both popular now.. But they are old names, and I think they are beautiful. Unfortunate they've been overused now.

It was never expected of anyone. My parents did it with us and we have a lot of good family names that go back and the spouses' families have had some as well. A lot of the names belonged to people who weren't even alive when the children were born, so they wouldn't have known anyway. We have a few Jrs who are boys. My poor niece wants a family name. I told her my Mom looked in a family book and found one of her names, so she has one! She felt better.

Well, that would certainly be much worse than my guesses!!! I would be pretty crushed to have those initials, though with girls, the last name initial is usually in the middle and larger on monograms. Geez... that'd be hard one to live with.
