well that's good news!. So, how much oil was in the oil pan? Just on the magnet or a bunch in there?
Why did you pull the oil pan? WHat kind of noise was it making?

Just curious, where did you buy it from?

Replaced an 8 cylinder engine in Ford truck with Remanufactured engine from Jasper. It was about $6500 including labor. I imagine Jetta would be less but I have no idea.

here is a thought. find an identical 2009 model and color. remove all vin numbers and swap them out. basically steal an identical car and then leave your crappy car somewhere with those vins.
the crappy car gets returned to the owners without knowing

Took the car into the dealer because the CEL was coming on with the code P0106 - Manifold Absolute Pressure.
Had them replace the sensor but the light kept coming on.
this last trip in for the light had them drop the oil pan to check for metal before doing anything else.

I'm in a similar situation with my 2006 chevy 1500. 100k miles and we think the crank bearing is shot. It is going to cost the same to fix it vs buying a re-manned motor. My motor/labor expectations are currently $3,000/$1,700... with an expectation of probably $500-$1,000 of "unexpecteds".
If you're looking for a good estimate for your car, go to jasper's website. Have the vin and engine specs of the vehicle ready. Jasper motors are good motors, so the prices will likely be in the mid to higher range, but good quality.
It's a tough decision to make...as I know how you feel. Unless you know someone who owns a shop and/or a mechanic who will go to the salvage yard and pull a used motor for you, you probably want to just buy a crate motor through a shop. Of course, if you're pretty mechanically inclined, go pull it yourself. But this isn't a driveway job...unless you have a driveway that leads to a mechanic's shop.
Also, if you're going to keep the car for the next 5+ years, go re-manned motor. If you're looking to drive it for just a year more, go junk yard or just scrap the car.
Good luck!

Placebeaux, I'm not trying to hijack the thread, but could you look up the labor for a swap in a 2006 chevy 1500 LT 2WD 5.3L not the motor that turns off cylinders at higher speeds. Vin letter T if that helps.
I'm curious, how are you looking that up? AllData?
Thanks in advance. Just trying to get a heads up. Jasper gives an estimate, but I'm not sure what that is based off of.

Thanks.
The rest of the car is in good shape.
I am looking at having to spend a good amount of money to get him something else or replacing the engine.

Identifix. It uses Chilton labor as its estimator

I just looked into this for a vehicle I had because the engine was going out even though it was only 4 years old (lifters, rocker arms, cam shaft, etc). You can find slightly used engines and get them installed for ~$3,500-$4,000. If you're planning on keeping the car for a while it might be worth it. If not, I would do what I did and take that puppy to a dealership and trade it in before you have to tow it in.

Take it to a Boat Launch and accidently put it in reverse, claim it and then use your insurance check and buy a Toyota...
