Car fax was clean. Regular maintenance was all met. 2 owner car.
Found a mechanic offering to install a matching engine for $3300. 50k miles out a totaled VW.
ETA: 1 year warranty on parts and labor.

Damn... did you get a really good deal when purchasing the car? Obviously before you knew about this problem
FWIW - don't be afraid to swap engines.. my dad and I did on my old mustang in 2007, wasn't that hard if you have all the tools and engine hoist - and we never had any problems after that.. if you have any kind of mechanical know how it's not that hard
