I think you meant to say they don't automatically provide protection. An idiot with zero training and shitty range attendance might not be a net positive to a situation.

I've read some ridiculous shite on here the last few weeks, but slackster, you my friend have taken the cake. I honestly thought you were arguing contrary points of view because you truly believed them. I now know you are trolling the board. Well done.

But you're no Walt.

The only gun I own is a little ruger 10/22, and that's just for plinking at targets on our property. I've never really felt like I needed one for protection, and I've lived on the edge of some rough places in BR and Nola. My philosophy is that if I'm ever in a situation a gun is necessary, then it's just not my day. I've toyed with the idea of a shotgun for the house, but never really acted on it past a quick thought.

I have no desire to carry a handgun. It would make me feel more uncomfortable and I don't want that responsibility.

We toy with moving out of the city. If we did, I'd probably get another gun or two for things like wild dogs and snakes and meth heads and whatnot.

I wear my seatbelt 100% of the time I'm in a vehicle. What does that mean? Oh and I also wear a life jacket with kill switch attached to me anytime I am running my boat. And I absolutely do not text while I am driving.

That's good.

My point was not specific to seatbelts. My point was that I doubt many people take full inventory of insidious dangers/threats that are all around them every day, yet they zero in on a threat that's far less probable to ever affect them.

What is so inflammatory about that? In my experience, people who own handguns say it is a safety thing when the reality is that they just really like owning and shooting guns. I understand safety is some component of it, I don't believe it TRULY is the primary reason for many people. It is much easier to just say you own a handgun for personal protection than it is to say you like guns. How is that really contrarian?

How is that a counterpoint to my post? You may own a gun purely for safety reasons, but for many other people safety is just an added bonus. My grandfather was a gun dealer. Many people love guns. There is nothing wrong with that.

Life is all about risk management. Nothing wrong with carrying a small handgun. People have irrational fears about outside threats, but some also have irrational fears about firearms.

Do you even understand what you are saying right here?

Yes...I've fricking explained it five times.

quote:

I read that as if you are attacked you would like to be armed.

Again...no fricking shite.

quote:

So can you guarantee with 100% certainty that you will never be attacked?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

quote:

I understand it is a low percentage, but it 100% that it won't happen?

NO again.

And...? Seriously...what's the point? That because I can't honestly say with 100% certainty that I'll never in my entire lifetime be attacked then I need to assume I will and therefore come strapped out of my house daily?

Sorry, no. My actual chances of being attacked are...while not 0...REALLY frickING LOW and therefore, IN MY OPINION...do not warrant ME owning a firearm IN THE OFF CHANCE I'm attacked.

Good grief. His analogy of taking a test was horrendous. You know you're going to need to have studied because you're literally walking into the test. Preparation there is not being careful, it's mandatory. If I were walking out of a saloon and into a gunfight, well yeah...I'd like to be armed. As I'm not, and as I'm under no delusion that I'm in any actual threat, I'm not seeing any reason to be armed either at home or away.

I mean, I'd walk Milpas at all hours of the night and not feel the need for a gun. That's what I've been trying to explain in this thread. Other places just aren't dangerous.

Not for everyone, and if that was her point, then I agree. There are many people who aren't comfortable with handguns and/or don't care to learn proper safety and maintenance basics. They have no business owning a handgun, and I think many of them know that.

I get it...really. I probably say this 5 times a day for other things. You going on vacation or taking a trip? I'm your guy...if I pack your stuff you ain;t leaving shite at home that you may end up needing!

I'm just not personally in any positions that would warrant me having to take along a firearm just in case...but I get it, really.

Not with me and certainly not on this board. I get why you may feel like you'd have to with leftys wanting to dismantle the 2nd, but that's not my take here at all.

Agreed. Depending on the person and situation, owning a handgun can decrease or increase risk.

As a gun owner I'll say this. If I'm carrying and someone starts shooting up the place....I'm getting cover and finding a way the frick out of there. Only if there is no safe way out will I shoot back. I'm not looking to be a hero, just to live longer.

I just took issue that you brought probability into the discussion. Probability of being attacked by a psycho undermines your position given that the odds are so incredibly low.

I don't feel threatened or that I need one. I've lived in shitty neighborhoods from L.A. to Chicago, so I don't scare very easily. Plus I've got two great guard dogs. People actually avoid my place; I'm surprised the mailman even drops by.

I appreciate that, I think.

I just don't see how my opinion in this thread is so contrarian. Many handgun owners feel like they always have to justify their choice to own guns. Hell, Hammertime said as much a page or two ago, but personal protection doesn't come close to explaining the amount of guns in this country.

All I'm suggesting is that people should feel comfortable admitting they just like guns. This is America, you don't need a "good" reason and shouldnt feel obligated to provide one.
