Did anyone else's father or grandfather really hate the Japs?
My dad had very ill feelings toward the Japanese through the 50's and probably a little into the 60's. He really never said much, it was more of an honor thing that we had kicked their arse and how they did it.
Now, I did know others where I grew up in the same timeframe that would rip out of the hands of their kid's little Jap transistor radio and crush it...I saw this happen. Sometimes very strong words of anti-sentiment and other times just a 100% bias towards anything Western Pacific.

I wouldn't say it was 97% in my experience but there were the usual suspects that would run inside or avoid going outside.
Never bothered me, then again I was an Army brat myself and many of times we'd be outside and as kids would stop for the colors.

My grandfather gave his pistol a couple years back. He told me it was only for shooting Japs. He passed last year at 94

I guess he doesn’t talk to a lot of people considering 3 of the top 4 car brands are Japanese.
He has a stake-bed Chevy truck from the 30's, a 'Vette from the mid 80's, a Studebaker Avanti and a mid 90's small Buick that is their every day driver. His yard and vehicles are immaculate. He retired from Caterpillar.
Good old guy.

1. This is ridiculously overplayed. In fact, I've seen this posted on other message boards and makes it appear like you weren't in the military at all, especially to choose Memorial Day as the opportunity to flame the military. Maybe some Joes ran a train on your old lady.
2. There is certainly a degree of laziness everywhere you go, but not even close to the percentage you imply here.
3. The #1 reason any servicemember ducks out of colors is because some a-hole uses it as an opportunity to accuse him of being a shitbird. Many times you can hear the cannon but you can't hear horn, or can't see the flag, or are so far away that you hear neither but then see a couple people saluting and everyone turns around and looks at the late-comers as if they did something wrong - and rest assured, some douche bag will come along and accuse that servicemember of being a shite bag for not standing long enough, not saluting soon enough, or not facing the correct direction, or some other nonsense, rather than giving a simple correction or using common sense. I've even seen guys carrying stuff, stop and stand at attention and get lit up because they didn't drop it all and salute and seen other times when guys carry stuff, they hear the cannon, place things on the ground and stand and salute, and they get lit up for not stopping immediately when they heard the cannon. With junior guys approached by an NCO it is often followed up with "Who's your First Sergeant?". When these are the consequences for rendering honors at colors, why wouldn't someone go inside?
But again, doesn't happen anywhere near as often as you imply. Maybe you're just a POG.
You sound like a real bad arse!
99% of the military are POGs you dumb frick.
Sorry that I was an electrician and not a super bad arse grunt who got to stay in the barracks all day like you

I'm 30, but my grandfather hated the Vietnamese
I'm not sure if any of my relatives served in WW2.

even cars pulled over and soldiers got out and did it.
Yea, I'm kind of guilty of that one. I have timed my trips to where I wouldn't have to stop the car and salute.

Only boots get caught outside for colors. Everyone else has enough sense to plan ahead. If you had to be outside, just be near a vehicle. Dropping everything you are doing for an bunch of songs was pretty retarded. I loved when people were unsure where the flag was and you had guys standing at attention in every direction LOL.

Which unit were you with on Schwab, Devil?
There’s only a few units up there so it’s easy to tell if you’re full of shite or not. I was on Schwab from 09-10. Killin PT sessions, snorkeling, and frickin the AF girls on Kadena.

My granddaddy did. He didn’t fight in the war after losing a bunch of fingers at the sawmill. Only time I ever heard him cuss was once when we were driving by a manufacturing plant flying their flag next to the Stars and Stripes. That was probably 35 years ago.

I knew a German POW that would not have anything to do with anything made by the Germans and would not speak to any visiting Germans.
He came out of the POW camp weighing 98 pounds and became an alcoholic.
Thinking of him today.
(Thinking of Captain Thomas Duckett too--shot down over Laos and classified as MIA until all the MIAs were declared dead sometime in the eighties. I remember an anguish of his parents over the years. His poor mother never believed he was dead and believed he was alive until she died.)

I'm still active and salute every chance I get, which isn't very often now based on the hours I go into and leave work.
When I was at Fort Carson you could hear the canon from my back deck as well as my neighbors. He was the son of an AF retiree. Whenever we were drinking on the deck we would stand and salute the flag in the evening.

Active Duty personnel who proclaim they didn't try to avoid the National anthem at some point, is a liar!
