I have a consumer PayPal account that I have had for years and years. I've always received payment to this account and have been able to send payments as well. It is associated with my personal name and personal e-mail address.

I just sold an electronic device on Swappa. The person paid me using PayPal (as he was instructed) but the funds aren't showing up in my personal PayPal account. Instead, I have been instructed to sign up using a business account:

quote:

To claim your payment, you'll need to sign up for a PayPal Business account. It's fast and easy, and there are no set-up or monthly fees – only low transaction fees.

quote:

Go to PayPal and follow the instructions for creating a Business account. After you sign up, this payment will be accepted and we will send you an email confirmation.

The e-mail looks legitimate, as it is coming from PayPal. so I signed up.

That was last night. Today, no payment has been posted to either account.

I've called PayPal and they have an enormous wait right now. Is this a scam and I got scammed? Or is this legitimate and something went sideways?

It usually takes about 1 to 2 business days for the bank account to be linked when making a new account

That's the thing though ... since creating my business account, I haven't been asked to enter or link my existing bank account.

Always have them pay you Friends and Family, there's no charge, and the money is in your account instantly.

I'm thinking the person paying you clicked "Pay for Goods or Services" when trying to send you money. This would indicate you're a business thus the need to open a business account. The person should have clicked "Send money to friends or family".

I think you have been phished. I receive G&S payments all the time for things I sell online, and I have a personal paypal account.

Also payments that are not immediately complete always show up in your summary as pending. Check your summary to see if the payment is being held up or has not been funded. You may have to wait a few days for a pending transaction, or maybe the other guy typed your email incorrectly.

Directly to PayPal's home page. Nothing was spoofed as far as I can tell.

It usually takes a day or two for the transaction to appear, but we've never had an issue with not receiving payment through our PayPal Business account and the one time we did, PP took care of it. I doubt you've been scammed, UNLESS the buy didn't really send a payment through.

This makes sense. I'll try to reach out to him.

I'd change your Paypal password just to be safe.

ETA: and the password for the email address you use for Paypal if you use the same password

You havent sent the item have you? I don’t know what Swappa is, but I’d tell the buyer you are having pay pal issues and you aren’t moving shite until you get it figured out.

Eta: don’t do friends and family. That’s horrible advice. Friends and family is like Venmo and has no fees and therefore no protection. May as well get a western union.

A personal account is literally for selling thing personally. I don’t use PayPal anymore though so I’m not sure what their current requirements are.

I hate the social media component of Venmo. I prefer square cash personally.

I would imagine a "business" account takes longer to set up, and more complex, than a personal account does.

I recently opened a checking account for a small charity I am involved with, and the amount of paperwork and stuff the bank needed required three visits to the bank. meanwhile, a personal account can be opened in minutes.
