Would the kids that used to be called "retarded" be diagnosed with autism today?

No jackass, not the ones with Downs Syndrome. That's obvious. I remember there was a kid that was in Special Ed (no I was not in special ed) that if you would go up to and make a buzz sound he would put his hands over his ears and take off running.
I felt bad for the kid. He would be walking in the hall during class and it never failed, as soon as someone saw him they would doing it loud "buuuzzzzz" and he would take off running. He was considered retarded, but I am pretty sure today he would likely be considered Autistic.
